The GlobalGiving Challenge ended on December 23rd. After a vigorous 3 weeks of campaigning, DARE Network is happy to report that thanks to all of our very very generous donors, we secured a permanent place on the GlobalGiving Website. This was our goal to help provide a sustainable space on the internet to create awareness about the situation of Refugees from Burma and to support DARE Network's on-going program and projects.
Thanks to all of you, not only did we secure our place but we also raised over $9000. including the Bonus Day Bonus. We came in number 12 out of over 170 projects in the challenge. It was exciting for everyone here in the DARE Office in Mae Sariang, on the Thai/Burma Border to work hard and follow the results. Friends, family, Friends of friends and family, and virtual strangers all did what they could to make our project possible.
Now although we have more money to raise, we can begin our Teens for Kids project for 2011, starting with an Inter-Camp Youth Ultimate Frisbee Tournament. We expect that at least 60-80 teams will take part in the games giving the Burmese Refugee Teenagers a great opportunity to use their Addiction Prevention knowledge to share with other Teens, Children, Families and Community Leaders. We expect to reach well over 3000 people. You will see the pride in the young peoples' faces when we send you some photos in a couple of months.
The Ultimate Tournament may result in two young refugees, a boy and a girl, getting the opportunity to go to Bangkok to the big South-East Asian Hat Tournament in February. They will be sponsored by the Soi Dawgz Ultimate Team, a group of Thai and Ex-pat players who volunteered their skills, money and time to the DARE Program over the last 3 years. We just have to convince the Thai Authorities to let these to young players out of the camps for a few days. Now that will be a challenge! But we will try.
Meanwhile, with the rest of the money raised and possibly more to come through Global Giving, we will start to plan our Traditional Music Programming and Puppet Shows in the camps to help children stay away from Solvent Abuse.
Thanks once again to everyone who supported the December Global Giving Challenge for DARE Network. Please tell your friends and neighbours about our work and direct them to www.darenetwork.com to learn more or visit the project at GlobalGiving.
