Room to Read is planning to rebuild schools affected by the tsunam in Sri Lanka. This will include 15-20 preschools and elementary schools.
The Ammen Preschool in the village of Thambilivil was completely destroyed in the tsunami. There is currently a makeshift shelter where informal construction is being held.
We are currently building our first two schools in the eastern region of Ampara. Each of the schools will be 24 feet by 14 feet with brick walls and a tiled roof. There will be wrought iron grills on the windows for security and fresh, cool air.
The new school will be located 600 meters inland on the grounds of the existing junior/secondary school Kalai Magal School.
