Help raise $10,000 to inspire and support 50 inner city high school students to win the Presidential Service Award through buildOn's after school youth empowerment program in Philadelphia in the 2014-2015 school year! buildOn's youth service programs engage students in challenging urban areas and show them the limitless power they can achieve through community action. There are 13 programs operating in Philadelphia that have contributed over 110,000 hours of service! Help achieve even more!
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Students in Philadelphia's school system graduate at a rate just barely above 60%. The drop-out crisis has a profound effect on the city and on its youth. buildOn works with schools and local service partners to address this crisis, one student at a time.
How will this project solve this problem?
buildOn runs 13 after school youth service programs in Philadelphia high schools throughout the city. Students strive to address Philly's specific needs with their outreach. At Lutheran Settlement House our students have served over 400 hours there this year volunteering to work with the kids that live at the shelter there. Our buildOn students have planned and facilitated fun activities to teach them about different cultures, the environment and how to get along with others.
Potential Long Term Impact
BuildOn's after school youth empowerment service programs contribute to the betterment of both the community being served as well as the high school students serving that community. Since it's started, the Philadelphia after school program has given over 112,554 hours of service to the Philadelphia area at large through working at soup kitchens, beautification projects, and other volunteer opportunities.
