Nourish International at UNM aims to support Casa de la Mujer, a local organization in Nicaragua, to provide housing for women and their families in order to improve their livelihood and independence.
A substantial portion of the population in Nicaragua is impoverished. Women operate on the margins of society and find it difficult to take control of their lives, especially when they must care for a child. Casa de la Mujer addresses the needs of women, not only by constructing safe shelters, but also through legal resources, job training, and other services. Nourish International at UNM members will partner with Casa de la Mujer to build homes and provide fresh starts for families in need.
Our project will build and improve upon houses for women and their families. Deeds to homes will be sold at little cost to female heads of household--providing the owners with a property investment and increasing their independence.
Women and their children will have a safe shelter to call home that will allow them to focus on other needs in their lives. By becoming home owners, Nicaraguan women will gain independence and be more able to provide for their childrens' well-being.
