The partnership with the BrazilFoundation led us to participate in the GlobalGiving challenge and allowed us to realize our dream: to build a school house for EPC Paramoti.

Our experience over the past 7 years of work in Paramoti, has always been based on solidarity and adaptation to the limited resources with which we perform our work. It was through studying in the town square, and at the home of friends, and sometimes in more formal locations like schools and churches, that we were able to give 30 young people access to university. Giving the children of farmers the prospect of a better life through education was a landmark in our community. Our goal with the campaign was to build a headquarters for EPC Paramoti. Below is a description of the entire progress of the work:

What have we completed? The school building contains 8 rooms (1 classroom, 1 canteen, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 1 reading room and 1 computer room). All the inner walls have been plastered and painted. All of the wiring in all rooms is complete, and all rooms now have lighting. The dormitory doors have been installed, as well as the shelves for books in the library. There is 1 bathroom ready, and it is already in use.

What is still in progress? We are completing the inside of the second bathroom and finishing the kitchen (sink and countertop). Guardrails for outside the side windows and 3 fans for the classrooms have all been purchased, and will soon be installed.

What’s still left to do? The floors throughout the building are unfinished. They currently consist only of a thick cement, and require a covering.

It is our hope that this site, built with bricks of cooperation, will host many achievements by young people, not only from Paramoti, but from the entire region. We are confident that we will conclude the construction very soon, and remain committed to bringing hope through education. At EPC Paramoti we believe that together we can change our perspective on life and build a new history.

Your support made this possible!

BrazilFoundation and EPC Paramoti are proud to announce that this campaign has reached its goal – the school house is completely constructed! Thanks to all of your donations through GlobalGiving, as well as the support this project received offline – including a generous donation from the Prentice Foundation – the school is now a functional space where students in Paramoti are already participating in cooperative learning and working towards accomplishing their goals and securing their futures.

Our gratitude to all of our donors and to the program’s coordinator, Aurenir Sales Luz, who worked tirelessly to make this dream a reality. EPC Paramoti has already made such a difference in the lives of rural Ceará’s youth, and with the completion of this school house, access to higher education is now within reach for so many more aspiring students in the region.

We would also like to note that while construction on the school house is now complete, EPC Paramoti is still in need of resources to finish furnishing and purchasing equipment for their new space.

Please see the attached photos of EPC Paramoti students making use of their new facilities and an inspiring talk from Manoel de Andrade, who began the powerful movement of cooperative learning in his home state of Ceará just a few years ago.

This is a very special moment for all of us at EPC Paramoti because it is the first year that we will begin studies in our own school house.

Thanks to the funds raised through the GlobalGiving campaign and our partnership with BrazilFoundation, we have succeeded in constructing much of our school building. At our new school house, many rural students will have the opportunity to broaden their horizons and eventually enter university, just like the 30 young people who have already achieved higher education through EPC Paramoti.

What has been accomplished so far?

All construction of the walls and the roof has been completed at the school, and the walls require only finishing (plastering and painting). The classroom now has doors and lighting as you can see, and all that's left is proper flooring for its completion.

What is still in progress?

The interior finishing of the rooms in the school house, such as flooring and plastering, still remains to be completed. The construction of bathrooms, a kitchen, a computer room and a library/reading room are all currently underway. The facade is also nearly finished, aside from painting and some finishing touches.

General Overview

Since 2006, EPC Paramoti has engaged in a quest for the social inclusion of low-income youth and their attainment of higher education through cooperative learning. A lack of funds at times hindered our actions, but regardless, this group never stopped believing in a collective dream: the construction of its very own school house for EPC Paramoti.

For the first time we can see our dream, our building is already up, and in the near future we hope to be able to conclude our construction and continue bringing hope to dozens of young people from our region. The space
itself for EPC Paramoti represents the expansion of a program that has already enabled 30 low-income youth to obtain college degrees, in a community with many obstacles to higher education.

We are committed to continuing to bring hope to the young people of our community.

"One day we decided to dream and believe that through cooperation it might be possible to overcome the cruel statistics about education in our region. In the beginning we were doubtful, but then we looked around and there were so many others like us, willing to walk with us, and we walked. We have seen that it is possible, not only can we get to college, but we can begin to change the world around us.” – Aurenir Sales Luz

First, we would like to thank everyone who has supported BrazilFoundation in raising funds for the construction of a schoolhouse for the students of EPC Paramoti, and who helped us to succeed in GlobalGiving’s Open Challenge this past September!

As the quote above illustrates, this project is about so much more than building a schoolhouse. It is about opening a world of opportunity for a community. It is about helping the members of a community create positive change for themselves. And it is about the construction of a collective dream – access to higher education and economic opportunity in rural Ceara. On behalf of the BrazilFoundation, thank you for being a part of this inspiring initiative.

We wanted to take this opportunity to update everyone on the progress of the schoolhouse in Paramoti! Aurenir Sales Luz, project coordinator and founder of EPC Paramoti, reports that the foundation for the schoolhouse has been laid and some of the rooms have been built. Please check out the updated pictures below. This campaign could not have come at a better time, as the space EPC Paramoti has been temporarily occupying will no longer be available come November 1. Thankfully, the schoolhouse has reached a point in construction where students can potentially begin to use the space for their studies.

On a final note: there is still much work to be done! We will continue to fundraise through GlobalGiving until we have met our goal and completed the construction of the schoolhouse, making it fully functional for the students. Right now the EPC Paramoti schoolhouse is still missing doors between the rooms, electricity, floor finishes, and so on. So, spread the word! We’ll leave you with a final thought and thanks from Aurenir.

"Our gratitude to all who contributed to the campaign to build the EPC Paramoti, we are now all the more aware that only through cooperation can we overcome the challenges we face.”
