Construction Finished!

Dear Friends,

We are so happy to inform you that we are declaring the project to construct this clinic officially completed! As those of you who have been following along know, this construction has been a long process, and we've been already working out of the (partially functional) space for quite a while now, as construction has proceeded.

However, this week the last outstanding item - installation of the final drain pipes for the property under the town highway - was completed! This means that the clinic is now finally connected to all the municipal waste water services, and the project is a success.

Thanks you your support and generous donations, this new clinic will provide a comfortable and secure environment for providing health services to the 5 communities that it serves.

If you would like to continue to follow along with Wuqu' Kawoq, please follow this link, where you can sign up for our email list. Alternatively, you can visit our other projects on Global Giving here.

Thanks again for your support!

Clinic Inauguration

Dear friends,

We just returned from an exciting trip to Guatemala. One of the focal activities of this trip was the formal inauguration of this clinic building.

Although we've already been using the building informally to see patients for a while now, while construction was finishing up, this inauguration gave us the opportunity to unite the entire community to celebrate the conclusion of the project. In attendance were officials from local government and school and hundreds of community members. There were speeches, dances, and food. The activity was organized by Wuqu' Kawoq's regional staff and by the local women's action community that is in charge of running this clinic and its associated activities.

We wanted to take this opportunity to thank you so much for all your generous support in getting this project off the ground. Even though the clinic is now operational, there are still giving opportunities, as we still have a some clinic supplies and furniture that we would like to add to round out the space.

As always, feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions at peter@wuqukawoq.org.

Phase 2 of Construction Nearly Complete

Dear Friends -

Things are going so well with this project, thanks to your help and support! As you know, the first clinic is now fully functional and operating at capacity. The second building, which will serve as bathrooms, office, and classroom space is nearing completion! I'm attaching some pictures that show the progress we've been making.

Be sure to follow along as this project evolves! Even thought the bricks and mortar portion of the construction is nearly finished, we still need your help furnishing the space with office and clinical equipment, painting the walls, beautifying the common space out front, etc.

Phase 2 of Construction Under Way!

Dear Friends:

Thanks to the generosity of your donations, we have now been working and seeing patients in the first completed clinic building for several months! This has been such a major boon to our clinical work, as the well-lit and ventilated space allows for much more accurate and comfortable patient assessment in the tropical heat. We finally have reliable electricity and water installed as well, so things are operating at 100% capacity.

In the last few weeks, we also broke ground on the second phase of the construction. As you may remember from my previous project updates, the first phase of the construction finished the major clinical and patient care areas. However, since a lot of what we do in these communities is focused on education of parents and community leaders, we feel like it is important also to have space for classes and other large group activities. Therefore, the second building, which is being constructed right next to the first, will contain an open space suitable for these activities. It will also have a separate attached office for our social workers, which will permit them to safely store records and conduct interviews in private with families.

I am attaching a few photos that show this second phase of the construction getting underway!

As always, thanks for your ongoing support for this project. As a reminder, GlobalGiving is conducting a special Mother's Day campaign from May 1-13. All donations made to this project (or to our other projects, here or here) "in honor of" a loved one during this time will make us eligible for additional funds!

Construction Part 1 is wrapping up, on to Part 2!

Dear friends, we are so excited about the continuing progress on this clinical facility! We have been now seeing patients in the newly constructed clinic building for a few months, and our staff and patients are all delighted to have such a spacious, well-lighted, and well-ventilated structure to work in! Things are still a bit 'rustic,' as we are still working on getting all the doors and windows in place, wiring in the electricity, etc. However, even in this state, it is still such a great improvement over our previous clinical facility!

Over the last few weeks, we finally got running water up and working reliably, which was yet another major step forward! I am attaching a few pictures of our construction team digging in the water line, to give you a sense of this process.

Since we anticipate that all the finishing work on this first clinic building will be done in the next month or so, we are now starting to move into fundraising for the second phase of this project! In the second phase, we will build another building adjacent to the first one. However unlike the first building, which is used just for seeing patients, the second building will be an open classroom and multipurpose space, where we can hold training sessions for health workers and educational classes for members of the community. It will also house office space for our social work staff.

Stay tuned for updates from us regularly on how this second phase is progressing. As always we appreciate your continued support, and we hope that you will stay with us as we move forward!
