Creativity Explosion!

Lovely Workshop Attendees
Lovely Workshop Attendees
What an incredible meeting yesterday! But it was no easy task attempting to reign in and focus all of our wonderful, creative thinkers. It is especially exciting to see the increasing number of survivors who are joining us to prevent others from being victimized!
1)  Priority: reinforce our outreach strategies to at-risk girls and build advocacy among youth in SE Portland through
  • continued weekly workshops
  • increase the number of leadership teams and workshops throughout the week
  • remain mindful and purposeful in developing relationships while bringing redeeming hope in Christ
  • maintain purposeful connections with DHS, schools, apartment managers, churches and businesses
2)  Host a "Dress for FREEdom" event in March. Last year's event attracted 48 girls living in foster care or shelters along with their caseworkers and foster families. Youth group's from several churches collaborated to make the event spectacular. Christina shared her story and the girls were on the edge of their seats: very powerful. This year's event would add an adopt-a-dress element to encourage attendees to pick out two dresses: one prom or banquet dress to take home and one as their restoration project at a Design Studio workshop.
3)  Hold a fashion show to raise awareness and fight trafficking through the Adorned in Grace Bridal and Formalwear in May or June. Incorporate a segment for re-purposed / re-created entries as an illustration of the hope that we communicate to the girls: the Great Designer can take the tattered fabric of our lives and transform it into a Beautiful Work of Art.
4) A professional architect is working on the build-out of the 2,400 sq ft of donated space and getting very close to securing the City permits to begin construction so that we can expand our capacity for working with the girls and holding these community events on-site.
Thank you for being a vital part of Adorned in Grace, Compassion Connect, Inc. and the Church as it reaches out to vulnerable and exploited women and girls.  May the Lord continue to be Present through your love and faithfulness.
Sincerely,

Linda and the Team

Weekly Workshops Underway!

A Creative Friend
A Creative Friend

The Adorned in Grace Design Studio has held a number of special events throughout the past year that have attracted over 50 girls. But the team is especially excited that in September, the Studio began weekly after-school workshops and also held its first monthly all day Saturday workshop.

As we squeeze into the temporary training room that is home to hundreds of dresses, piles of fabric, 9 sewing machines, endless notions and of course, girls, we are delighted that we can meet regularly even while we wait for completion of the Design Studio.

One precious guest who has attended all of our first six weekly workshops is a 13-year old from the neighborhood who has been in the foster care system for 6 years. Her foster mother said she has an extremely low (59) IQ. To our creative artists, it seems as though our young friend just wants and needs something she cares enough about to invest herself in. She loves, loves, loves designing!

Two lovely young women from Napal visited the workshop last week and said they "just need something to do". They aren't in school and haven't been able to find jobs but they would love to learn how to sew. Two other girls who attend a nearby alternative high school stopped by on a Monday afternoon to see what we are up to. Compassion Connect Executive Director, Milan Homola, gave them a tour of the training room and invited them back to the workshops. We are eager to establish a relationship with each one and encouragement them as they navigate life.

Thank you all for remembering the designers, mentors, snack providers and prayer warriors who have been so faithful to stick with this work. Plans for the next Adopt-a-Dress contest as well as a Dress for FREEdom event are also underway!

While progress on City permitting to continue construction on the training center has had its challenges, just today we met with a commercial architect who is willing to take on this project! This is a huge step forward in providing a comfortable and safe place for girls to dream big and become advocates in the fight against trafficking rather than victims.

Thank you for helping Adorned in Grace connect with and serve these lovely young ladies!

Sincerely,

Linda and the Team

Tons of Help Provided to make space look beautiful

Agape Blitz service
Agape Blitz service

Hi, Friends!

We have much to celebrate at the Design Studio as we prepare for next steps! Praise be to God for many things, including but not limited to:

  • Cross-continent Engineering added 1,247 sf of donated office and training space upstairs for the work of Compassion Connect and Adorned in Grace (in addition to the original 2,400 sf downstairs)
  • The damage from the recent fire was minimal (more below)
  • The upstairs offices and training room are carpeted, furnished and equipped!
  • A large supply of dresses are on-site and ready to inspire future designers
  • Workshops and events have been fruitful and blessed
  • Neighborhood girls are eagerly awaiting regularly scheduled sessions

In order to advance the work with the girls and complete permitting and construction on the remaining 2,400 sf, we need your help.

1. Advance the outreach using our existing facilities
  • A second team of seamstresses, mentors and prayer warriors are needed to work with up to 8 at-risk girls using the upstairs training room
  • A team is needed to facilitate the next Adopt-a-Dress event
  • Please let me know if you are interested in attending the next planning meeting
2. Complete permits for construction on the basement

This is obviously spiritual warfare.  Much prayer is needed to successfully navigate the City of Portland permitting requirements that would allow us to use the downstairs to bring hope and healthy relationships to at-risk girls. It's no surprise that while driving to the donated site, we pass a half dozen strip clubs who have secured building permits, allowing the victimization of young girls.

  • Please pray for a civil or structural engineer who can help us assess the structural requirements in order to comply with City commercial codes
  • Pray for a CAD technician who can submit the requested drawings

A fire broke out early yesterday after two homeless people accidentally ignited wood chips in the flower bed. Fortunately, CC staff arrived before  a lot of damage was done but a small section of siding needs to be repaired or replaced. Also flood lights need to be installed around the exterior to deter camping guests. Needed:

  • Someone to repair or replace the damaged vinyl siding (or funds to gift it done.)
  • An electrician to help put up outside flood lights. This will be especially important as we have more girls visit the studio in the coming months. We have a budget for supplies and fixtures but desperately need expertise.

Thank you again for your prayers, encouragement, partnership and support. The Adorned in Grace Design Studio Team couldn't do this without you!

Linda

3 DAYS TO GO! A $2,000 BONUS IS VERY POSSIBLE!

We are currently tied for 4th place in having the highest number of unique donors!

During this home stretch, this outreach project has a very good chance of earning a $2,000 bonus! before the April 30th deadline.

Please tell your spouse, your kids, other family, friends and associates!

If each of you were to recruit even one $10 donor, the $2,000 bonus could easily go to build the Design Studio. That's a pretty good return for the money!

Thank you, thank you for supporting this worth while project! It has been not only heart-warming but amazing to see you step up so that you can stand with at-risk girls in our City.
