"Teachers for Vietnam" wants to reach out to more universities with a great need for native speakers of English to improve the communications skills of their students and faculty. Our teachers become cross-cultural ambassadors, building bridges between the U.S. and Vietnam.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Vietnamese university students have almost no exposure to native speakers of English. Thus, their oral communication skills are limited. Often it is difficult to understand them. Having one of our teachers work with them in the classroom for a semester or full year greatly enhances their ability to speak and understand the spoken colloquial idiom. Our teachers reach about 200 students each semester.
How will this project solve this problem?
Adding another teacher to our program will increase out outreach and the number of students whose English skills can be greatly improved.
Potential Long Term Impact
Command of the English language is essential for today's young Vietnamese embarking upon careers in business, tourism, government, journalism, finance, and teaching. We can help Vietnam to develop this youthful "human capital." At the same time, the teachers we send over have truly life-transforming experiences.
