People Improvement Org serve over 900 children a day. PIO has 3 schools. Borey Santhipeap II is one of PIO school. The families of these children have force to moved out from the riverside slum because the govt took their land and arranged to given them a free home outside of the city 18 kms. The area lacks the most basic infrastructure and is one of the poorest community in Cambodia. Our goal is to build a library for these children so they can have a safe place to gather and learn to read.
The community of BSTP II is a recent development created to provide shelter for some of the poorest families who have been relocated from the riverside slum in central Phnom Penh. These families came from the provinces to the city in search of work but ended up scavenging trash dumps and garbage on the street to earn enough money to eat. These children are some of the poorest in Cambodia and without a proper education the cycle of poverty will continue. The area lacks schools and access to books
PIO has already been providing education to 200 children in BSTP II since 2007. By building a library, the children will have a positive safe environment where they are free place to reading and is encouraged. These children will gain the skills and confidence needed to get out of poverty. Being exposed to the knowledge that books bring will encourage the children to discover their strengths and become active global citizens.
Children who become educated and literate have much better prospects for the future. This will encourage the children to become productive active citizens in the world. In addition by focusing on girls, they will postpone the age at which they get married and start families which has been a proven way to break the cycle of poverty. Without this program many of these children will fall prey to gangs and drug use and become prime targets for sexual exploitation.
