Borrowed Freedom provides Therapeutic (Adaptive) Riding, Hippotherapy and Equine Experiential Education for more than 45 clients with physical, intellectual, developmental, emotional and socio-economic special needs. All sessions are delivered at no charge for those with demonstrated need. With our proven curriculum we help riding students and therapy clients overcome many of the obstacles they face by encouraging personal growth, integrity, and wellness through horsemanship.
The benefits of Therapeutic Riding and Hippotherapy (a medical treatment utilizing the movement of a horse) are well documented. Programming is very expensive to deliver due to the costs associated with the care of the horses ($2500+ per horse) which creates high session fees of $300-$500 for 10 weeks of services. Insurance typically excludes coverage so families struggle to pay these costs. Without scholarship funds we are unable to serve the special needs community in the capacity it needs.
In addition to the many physical benefits Hippotherapy and riding deliver, our program stimulates individuals to develop problem solving techniques, increase the ability to self-regulate behaviors, increase cooperative teamwork and stimulate critical thinking skills. By providing scholarship funds we can help individuals ages 2 through adulthood become active and valued members of the community, while providing these life changing services at no cost to the individual or their family.
If our goal is reached we can provide 15 clients with Hippotherapy, 10 clients with Therapeutic Riding and 40 clients with group Equine Facilitated/Experiential Education. Improved health and physical well being, decreasing challenging behaviors, building trust, developing positive relationships, and engaging students in the learning process are just a few of the goals we work to accomplish during our lessons and sessions. We encourage our clients to return as mentors and volunteers.
During 2012, with the support of GlobalGiving.org supporters, we expanded to a full year (40 week) program. The effects have been dramatic! We hope that we can achieve even greater success in 2013!
