Fall 2011 Born to Read Update

Greetings, Born to Read supporters! Thank you for your help in our effort to equip Bexar County families to successfully promote reading in the home beginning at birth.  It is only through the dedication of our staff, volunteers, partners and donors that Born to Read is able to have such an extensive impact on the San Antonio community.

I can’t wait to share the latest Born to Read scoop with you!  In our last update I had shared that the San Antonio Public Library Foundation, San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA), and Trinity University Press had begun to plan the creation of San Antonio’s own bilingual numbers, colors, and shapes board book series using art pieces from SAMA as the images for each book.  This unique collaboration aimed at instilling a lifelong love of reading and fostering an appreciation of art and cultural diversity in San Antonio’s youth. I am pleased to announce the first book in the series, “1, 2, 3 Sí” has been published and is being distributed to newborns through the Born to Read bags.  Moreover, H-E-B (grocery chain in Texas and Mexico) is incorporating “1, 2, 3 Sí” into its new Read 3 literacy program. The book is also available at local retail outlets such as SAMA’s gift shop, Barnes & Noble, Books-a-Million and the Twig Book Shop with negotiations underway to expand it nationally through chains such as Anthropologie, Sam’s Clubs, Costco, Wal-Mart and Kroger.  SAMA held a kickoff event featuring Mayor Julián Castro reading the book to children.  The public event also incorporated a variety of book-inspired activities including storytelling, performances and hands-on art activities.

To learn more about “1, 2, 3 Sí” and the community partnership that made it a reality, please read the San Antonio Express-News article at: http://www.mysanantonio.com/default/article/Learning-to-read-with-help-from-the-Museum-of-Art-2192979.php.

Also creating literary excitement in the community, this past Saturday the San Antonio Express-News held its 8th Annual “Children’s Book & Author Celebration” benefiting the Born to Read initiative.  The purpose of this immensely popular event is to showcase authors who share their experiences and stories with local children, inspiring them to become avid readers and encouraging them to write their own stories.  Local writer and artist, Xavier Garza, and R.L. Stine, creator of the wildly popular Goosebumps series, brought ghoulish stories to life for the enraptured audience.  After the presentations eager youth met the authors personally and got their books autographed.
