Building a biogas plant at a shelter for survivors of brothel slavery near Mumbai, India, offering training and employment to survivors and providing clean energy to the shelter and community. As of 2012, an additional cattle shed is needed to keep up with the demands of running the farm, housing the cattle, and collecting the waste.
Hundreds of young girls are rescued from slavery each year by Rescue Foundation, India. Most were trafficked around age 12, and enslaved in Mumbai brothels, suffering severe trauma and abuse. Thankfully, many are now safely housed and cared for at a shelter and farm in nearby Boisar. Slavery survivors need intensive counseling, medical care and education. They also need realistic and sustainable job opportunities and training so they build safe, slavery-free lives.
100 survivors each year will be trained to operate a dairy farm and biogas plant at the shelter, supplying clean, renewable energy and dairy products to the shelter and local community while gaining marketable skills, empowerment and literacy.
This facility will provide clean renewable energy to a densely populated, polluted region and raise local awareness of environmental issues. Survivors will receive training and employment allowing them to safely rejoin society.
