Bicycle Updates from northern Namibia!

Happy New Year! We hope that this email finds you and yours having a wonderful 2014, and that your holiday season was merry and bright!

We have some exciting news to share with you: We have gotten official word from our partners in Namibia on the numbers and resupply route that our last shipment of bicycles took after reaching Namibia! Your efforts helped further sustain SEVEN Bicycling Empowerment Centers in northern Namibia! Woo! How amazing are you?!?

Here is the official breakdown:

Recipient:                   Total Number of Bicycles Received:

Nkurenkuru                  74

Singalamwe                63

Katima                        23

Ngoma                        50

Bunya                         40

Rundu                         20

Shikenge                    20

And, in addition to all of this bicycle goodness, and in large part thanks to our friends in Arkansas who donated their entire workshop of tools and parts, we sent boxes upon boxes of high quality tools and parts that projects will be able to use for years to come. Not only will this shipment, through your help, provide affordable and sustainable transportation for many in the region, but you have also directly helped empower folks to access employment, health care, and education. THANK YOU, from the deepest places in our hearts!

You will find a map of these lovely locations attached with this update. Even better, though, is that we will be conducting an evaluation/support trip to Namibia in April to be able to share with you some of the stories, faces, and places of the lives that you have helped to impact with your generosity. We cannot wait!! Because of time and budget constraints, and because you are so wonderful and we supported so many projects, we will not be able to visit every bicycle center, but we are hoping to visit as many as possible, so that we can send you a closer glimpse of all that you have accomplished. We are continuing to raise funds to cover the final evaluation costs, so please do not hesitate to share your good work with friends and family so that they can join our journey as well!

We are humbly and profusely thankful that you have chosen to partner with us in this effort to make an impact in the lives of others. You make it possible! If there are specific questions or pictures that you would like for us to capture during our April support and evaluation trip, please let us know! We would love to bring your thoughts along with us while we visit the bicycles that you helped repurpose across the world.

With warmth and gratitude,
Mary & the B4H GA family

Last Seen Off the Coast of Spain...

Sending our shipment off with fanfare...
Sending our shipment off with fanfare...

What, do you ask, was last seen off the coast of Spain? Our second shipment of recycled bicycles heading for Walvis Bay, Namibia, that is!! Thanks to YOU, we will be impacting commuities in Namibia by transferring transportation for development projects and personal empowerment. Woo hoo! You are such a rock star.

We had so much fun packing and shipping the container for our second shipment of bikes, tools and spare parts. If you weren't able to be a part of our load day, we'd love to share the joy through a few photos on our Facebook page.
We are so excited to share developments with you as the weeks progress and as we plan for our support and evaluation trip in the months to come. Although we will be taking a brief break to refocus/revitalize/refresh before our next shipment, do not fret, you can still keep up with all of the latest and greatest news, and continue to give towards bicycle empowerment, by connecting with us through our project page and on our website.
THANK YOU again for being our greatest champions and supporters. From our hearts to yours, we are abundantly grateful for your generosity and willingness to impact the lives of others!
With warmth,
Davis & Mary Harwell

Our Shipping Date is Approaching!

One bike can change a life...
One bike can change a life...

Can you believe that our shipping date is so quickly approaching?! With your help and the help of all of our wonderful supporters, we are taking great strides to making our second shipment of bikes, and second project in Namibia, a reality. As the end of May is only a few short weeks away, we wanted to take the time to update you on some of the amazing events that we have been a part of during this busy season:

  •  We have raised over 200 bikes towards our 350-400 bicycle goal, and over $8,000 towards our $12,000 goal. THANK YOU!! We are nearly there! Please help spread the word as we push towards the finish line.
  •  During the past several months, two extraordinary volunteers have taken it upon themselves to individually raise bicycles and connect our B4H chapter with outside resources. We are so proud and humbled by the hard work of Betty Jean Jordan and Hayden Bartsch, and would love to introduce them to you on our blog
  •  At B4H Georgia, we love collaborations. A lot. Last month we had the amazing opportunity to partner with our good friends at the BikeAthens Bike Recycling Program for a March bike drive. It is difficult to put into words the caliber of these folks and their organization, and we have been so privileged to have the opportunity to work with them since our beginnings. We raised 15 bicycles to add to the May shipment! If you are ever in Athens, please stop by and give them a holler...they'll set you up with an excellent refurbished bike that also supports low-income Athenians.
  •  Speaking of partners, the lovely people at Crooked Creek Storage in Alpharetta, GA, where all of our bicycles are waiting patiently for shipment, have graciously offered to function as a drop-off location for donated bicycles. Spectacular, yes?! We thought so, too. So, if you have been meaning to dust off that old bicycle and donate it towards our next shipment to Namibia, simply swing by their office during business hours and they will be happy to accept it for us. Easy as you please.

Last, but not least, we want to extend our gratitude to you --our partners, funders and supporters-- for making this project possible. Davis and I and our small team of volunteers could not do anything if it weren't for you. We are so grateful to be on the journey together!

Peace and love from us and ours to you and yours -
Mary

Give Gifts for Good this Holiday Season

Hello there, wonderful supporters!

We hope that you all are doing well and enjoying the beautiful mess of busyness and delight that the holidays can bring! In this special season of thanksgiving and reflecting, we would be remise if we did not take a moment to tell you all how incredibly grateful we are for each and every one of you. We appreciate your support, your giving hearts, your continued partnership, and your continued patience with our many emails and social media exploits. You all are our heros!

We also wanted to send you a little update on the wonderful happenings at Bicycles for Humanity - Georgia, and ways that you can give gifts with lasting impact this holiday season!

  • We hosted two incredibly fun film screenings in Athens and Atlanta this fall, for the Georgia premier of "Where on Earth is My Bike?"! We had an absolute blast, and would love to share photos from these events with you on our Facebook page.
  • Some amazingly talented friends of B4H GA created a video for us from footage of our May evaluation trip to Namibia. If you haven't seen it already, it is worth the watch!
  • Gifts for Good this holiday season: There are so many ways that you can give empowerment and hope through transporation this year! By donating through the GlobalGiving Gifts for Good giftshop, you can select to receive a free bracelet made by women of the Namibian Himba tribe! And, to make it even better, EVERY donation for the month of December will receive a link to download an exclusive, pre-release track from our very own co-founder, Davis Harwell's upcoming album! A little ear candy(cane), as I like to say.

And, saving the best for last, we are thrilled to announce that we are over halfway to our fundraising goal for sending our second shipment of bikes to Namibia!! Great work, team!! Let's keep it going strong throughout the new year!

Thank you again for all that you do, and the wonderful support that you provide to Bicycles for Humanity - Georgia and the people we serve. We are honored to be on this journey with you!!

Happy Holidays to you and yours, from us and ours -
Mary Harwell & the B4H GA family
