Help keep 41,000 Bhutanese children in school

Summary

The UN World Food Program (WFP) supports the Government of Bhutan in it’s commitment to achieve the Millennium Development Goal of achieving Universal Primary Education by 2007.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

WFP provides food and hope for more than 41,000 students in Bhutan. Impeding the ability of many children to attend school is the country’s mountainous terrain, harsh climate and isolated settlements. Proper food storage and preparation is a serious concern in rural schools, where limited space, damp conditions and poor ventilation is common. Inadequate storage and cooking facilities, improper preparation and lack of clean water can often result in a loss of valuable food.

How will this project solve this problem?

WFP seeks to improve sanitation, kitchens and storage facilities in rural schools by installing permanent latrines, showers, fuel efficient stoves, and kitchen and storage facilities.

Potential Long Term Impact

With proper facilities, WFP can ensure valuable food is not wasted due to improper storage or preparation, allowing the agency to provide food to more students, enable increased boarding and encourage rural enrollment.
