Between the Lines Project Report Fall 2012

By Sara Berglund | VP, Fund Development

Our Between the Lines "fiscal year" begins in June so we have been hard
at work preparing for more readings at local correctional facilities during our
summer planning period.  Our next reading will be on October 13 at
Coffee Creek women's correctional facility in Wilsonville and another is
scheduled in November at Santiam men's facility in Salem.

This summer we have been working toward developing new impact measurement surveys to
gain a better understanding of how Between the Lines has impacted family bonds
and recipient children's interest in reading.  Our goal is to survey the
parents as well as the caretakers of the recipient children to get direct
feedback from both.

We have also been working to develop ideas to expand the program into hospitals
for children who are undergoing long-term or residential treatment and may not
have the comforts of home and family.  Lastly, we have been planning for our annual book drive with the new Barnes and Noble at Bridgeport Village coming up on December 8.  The book drive provides supporters of Between the Lines with two ways to help:  by buying and donating books from our wish list, or to shop for themselves with a percentage
of supporters' sales donated back to Between the Lines to purchase books in the future.  The book drive builds our inventory of books that are sent to recipient children.

We are so grateful to you for supporting the work of Between the Lines in breaking
the cycle of incarceration, developing family bonds, and promoting literacy in
families whose circumstances might otherwise deprive children from reaching
their fullest potential.  We look forward to sharing results with you
throughout the year!
