Summary

More than 250,000 women die each year in sub-Saharan Africa during pregnancy and childbirth due to a lack of basic medical care. Health workers, in particular, are desperately needed. AMREF is expanding its maternal health programs to help stop these needless deaths. Over the next 5 years, we will train 18,000 health workers that can save mothers lives, including 3,000 new midwives. We need your support to help ensure safer pregnancies and deliveries for women-at-risk in Africa!

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

AMREF has been working with African communities for more than 50 years, creating lasting health changes. We target women and children, often the most vulnerable to disease. Despite some progress, more than 250,000 women die each year in sub-Saharan Africa of common complications during pregnancy and childbirth. For every woman who dies, another 20 to 30 are left with debilitating diseases. Most of these deaths and disabilities could easily be prevented if women had access to basic medical care.

How will this project solve this problem?

Health workers are key to improving maternal health. An AMREF-trained midwife can save up to 80% of women at risk. Over the next 5 years, we will train 8,000 midwives and 10,000 community health workers who will provide health information and care to women at home and refer them to health facilities when needed. Through our clinical outreach program with rural hospitals, we will provide repair surgery for debilitating fistula for 7,500 women and train 5,000 local staff in fistula surgery & care.

Potential Long Term Impact

The positive impact will be seen for decades. AMREF-trained health workers provide a lifeline to women in remote communities. An additional 500,000 women of reproductive age will have access to medical care. Midwives trained by AMREF as part of this initiative will attend about 8,000,000 deliveries over the next 10 years alone, ensuring the safety of mothers and children. Hundreds of rural hospitals will have the knowledge to educate about fistula prevention and perform repair surgeries.

Project Message

I know how hard AMREF-trained midwives work to ensure the safety of women in their care. Through this project, we are training more health workers who help improve maternal health & save women's lives
