EDUCATE 200 WAR AND HIV/AIDS ORPHANED UGANDAN GIRL

 INTRODUCTION

This report by Platform for Labour Action presents the progress of some the beneficiaries who have benefited from the support to their education through the Global Giving Foundation. The project currently supports 46 children. The children are visited in school to assess their performance and progress and at home to assess their living conditions. During these visits they also receive counseling and guidance. The visits are made by the Field Officer.

 ABEJA EUNICE’ PROGRESS STORY

Abeja Eunice is 16 years old in senior one at Savior’s secondary school.  ‘’PLA started paying for my school fees from Primary Four Third term to date, am now in senior one and am so happy that am still in school.’’ Icompleted primary seven in 2009. Oburalceh tom, Eunice’ paternal uncle is so appreciative of the support that comes for PLA to her daughter. In a conversation with him, he said that he has tried to put Eunice into boarding school so that she can perform better without any difficulty but it’s becoming so hard for him since he is going old. Eunice’ performance is encouraging and has showed efforts of improving.

 Eunice was the 38th out of 250 students and some of her best performed subjects were physics 62%, religious education 62% and also English at 62%.“ Iam grateful to PLA for putting me in school and I hope PLA will assist me in accomplishing my dream of becoming a nurse. According to Eunice in order for her to maintain and improve on performance. ‘Iam always sent home due to none payment of extra fees which amount to 80,500 Uganda shillings ($40) that caters for electricity and  my meals of  66,000 Uganda shillings($30) every three months. If the above is met Eunice believes she will accomplish her dream of becoming a nurse.

 AGUTI DORINE TELLS HER STORY

 

Aguti Dorine is 14 years old and in p.6 at Aduku road primary school. She was at Elia Olet primary but left to Aduku road primary school, since she believes that it’s better in terms of teaching and finishing the syllabus. Dorine’s performance encouraging as per her progress report where she was the 15th out of 67 pupils. When asked whether she was ready to become a candidate, she said she was very ready since she would want to become a government  minister one day and to become one, she knows that she has to perform to her best. In a discussion about her performance with the deputy head teacher Agel Moses, he said that Aguti Dorine’s performance was actually improving every term and believes that with all conditions favorable, she is able to perform better in primary leaving exams.

‘I will be happy if PLA continues paying for my lunch and scholastic materials and to continue checking on me in school and at home’.

 AKOT REBECCA’S SUCCESS STORY

 Akot Rebecca is 12 years old in P.6 at V.H public school. At the moment, it’s her paternal aunty and uncle who are paying for her Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) and exams fees. ‘’My aunty tries to provide me with everything that I need in school and at home,’ narrates Rebecca ‘’My dream is to become a doctor and with hard work, I hope to make it,’ she added. Rebecca has no hard ships at home in fact she is in boarding school and seem to be active in the school clubs like wild life, where animal lives is concerned important. According to her teacher,’ Rebecca participates in class and most especially in debates that are held at school and with a little more help from the organization in terms of text books would highly improve her performance since there are few text books in the school.’’ ‘’I always wake up so early so that I don’t get to miss any lessons in order to perform better,’ she informed the field officer.‘’I do appreciate the efforts of PLA in supporting me academically and most especially physiologically since they talk to me and tell me nice things like my future will be great if I only add more effort to my books. We are grateful to Rebecca’s guardians for taking responsibility to care for her. She no longer needs support from PLA apart from encouragement to improve performance. She is grateful to Global giving donors for their contributions for the past four years.

 AKULLU DAPHNE TELLS HER STORY

Akullu Daphne is 12 years old in P.5 at V.H Public school. Daphne stays with her paternal uncle and mother but the condition at home is not good. She says,‘’My uncle drinks a lot of alcohol and after that, he yells and beats us at times he also beats up our mother, this has therefore made it so hard for me and my brothers and sisters because when ever our uncle comes home, our mother decides not to appear until he has gone back to the village where he stay for a week’’ cried Daphine as she narrated her story of the condition she undergoes at home. In Daphne’s school V.H public school, pupils are expected to pay the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) fees 10,000 ($5) exams fees 6,000 ($3) extra charges fees 12,000($6) and meal fees 25,000 ($12) which PLA pays for Daphine.PLA does not pay other costs. Acan Betty, who is Daphne’s math teacher took up the responsibility of paying her exams, PTA and extra charges fees after her mother failed to pay and ‘’yet Daphne was continuously missing classes’’ she said, and now its becoming hard for me to also contribute to her fees because of the many responsibilities that keep coming up, she added. Following up on Daphine’s school performance, her teacher says Daphine used to perform well but her grades seem to be declining, which is because she is often not at school. Her math teacher went on to give an example of the past term’s performance of which she was only able to sit for two exams. In Daphne’s progress report, she was 176th out of 217 pupils in her class and her best performed subject was math where she scored 55 out of 100. Daphne would like to join the boarding section but this would call for more 114,500Uganda shillings ($52) for every three months which is quiet expensive for her mother and math teacher.  ‘’My mother sells charcoal at a market in town, what she gets from the market is what we depend on as food,’.  ‘’I thank PLA for giving me a chance to study since primary two to date in primary five’’ said Daphne. She said PLA had provided her with scholastic material and meals. ‘’I want to become a bank manager,’ Daphne excitedly said. She believes that when she becomes one, she will be able to have a lot of money to help the needy children such as her and her siblings.

AWOR FAITH’S STORY

Awor faith is 11 years old in P.5 at V.H Public school. ‘’I love going to school, but home is far and I am always falling sick with malaria which makes it so hard for me to compete with the other children’ said faith. According to faith’s teacher, Acan Betty, ‘’faith is a very competitive girl and participates a lot in class.’’ She believes faith would have performed better if it was not for the fact that she is always sick. When I asked what illness that was, she answered back saying faith is infected with HIV/AIDS, ‘’this was told to us by her mother.’’ Faith lost her father in 2007 to cancer and her mother takes care of the entire family. According to faith’s progress report, her best done subject was English where she scored 61 out of 100. ‘’I want to become an accountant like my auntie’s son who I admire’’, because he loves his job and gets a lot of money, With this, am there going to try to perform much better in math so I can become an accountant n future, She added. ‘’PLA has helped me since p.3 and to date, school has been fine and I therefore appreciate the efforts by PLA and the donors in making a step to accomplish my dream of being in school’’.

Message from the Field Officer

‘I joined PLA in July 2010 and I have met some of these children for the first time. Iam also from Lira. I appreciate the support from the Global Giving Foundation and the donors for the assistance they are giving to these children who are in dire need. The lunch money enables these children to have a meal they may not have had at home and they are able to pay attention in class.’
