SUMMARISED QUARTERLY REPORT

 

 

Platform for labour Action continues to provide support to 26 girls with school lunch, scholastic materials and physiological support in all aspects of their lives, this with support from Global Giving. The beneficiaries go to government owned schools whose funding for school fees mainly comes from the Ugandan government, the schools that the girls go include: Elia Olet primary school, Lira Modern primary school, Lira police primary school, Lira primary school, Ojwina primary school, Starch Factory primary school, Lango Quran primary school, King James primary school, Railways primary school, Adyel primary school, Canon Lawrence primary school, Lira Parents’ primary school and Sir Samuel Joe nursery and primary school

This project has made a difference in the lives of so many girls in northern Uganda with access to education that has in turn built their self-esteem and performance through the continuous counseling and monitoring from Platform for Labour Action.
In this quarter of July, August and September 2014, there were various activities that were carried out in the project as highlighted below.

MONITORING VISITS

SCHOOL MONITORING VISITS
35 school monitoring visits were this quarter made to the different schools that were inclusive of Lira Modern primary school, Lango Quran Primary school, Adyel Primary school, Lira parents Primary School, Sir Samuel primary school, Canon Lawerence primary school and Lira primary school. The visits were made on a daily basis
This quarter the beneficiaries are studying harder as they prepare for their end of year examinations for the pupils in primary 5 and 6 while the pupils in primary 7 are studying hard to perform better in their primary Leaving examinations.
The visits were to also find out the beneficiaries fears, encourage them and monitor their class notes and exercises that they have been carrying out
During the visits one major thing that the program Assistant realized is that some beneficiaries have this quarter moved to others schools like Apio Cinderella who is now in Ogur. The reason for their leaving is that that the beneficiaries have been convinced during the holidays that the schools are not of standard yet this is a trick by some guardian to get these girls out of their homes. A follow up is being made in such cases.

HOME VISITS
Made 4 home visits to beneficiaries, this was a follow up visit to the beneficiaries who had been going to the school for holiday studies, one of the questions that I asked the beneficiaries, was if they had leant new things during the studies and they had. As this was demonstrated in some of the exercises that’s they had carried out after the lessons.

COUNSELING
All the beneficiaries that were talked to got counseling from the organization, some of the beneficiaries were able to share personal issues while the majority had mainly challenges at school psychological support was therefore provided to those children who seem to decline in performance to help them realize the importance of education and thus improve on their performances.

CALL FOR MORE SUPPORT
There is need for more support for the beneficiaries’ especially the girls that will join secondary school next year 2015, the funds will support the girls scholastic materials both meals and development fees at the different schools.
The cost in secondary school is higher than the current primary schools fees.
This quarter PLA program Assistant managed to talk to more than 5 guardians about the girls under their care; this was after talking to a number of girls that had issues the way they are treated in their different homes.
One of the guardians Musa Opaka has agreed to contribute 100,000 to the education of Epilla Faridah who is now in senior one at Lira Town College. With this amount, she remains with a balance of 150,000 which she is requesting the donors and Platform for Labour Action to support her with.
PLANNED ACTIVITIES
As the primary seven beneficiaries prepare for their primary seven examinations, there is need to plan for how they will continue to receive support in secondary school, the girls have worked hard to improve their performance so as to join secondary school.
PLA will continue to support the girls in providing them with physiological support during home and school monitoring visits thus, they will also have a holiday event in December to personally share with PLA Staff their personal issues and the support that they will need.

QUARTERLY REPORT FOR MONTH JULY, AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER 2014.

Platform for Labour action with support from Global Giving is currently supporting 26 girls with school lunch, scholastic materials and physiological support in all aspects of their lives. The girls go to government owned primary schools; Lira primary school, Lira Modern primary school, Lira police primary school, Elia Olet primary school, Starch Factory primary school, Lango Quran primary school, King James primary school, Railways primary school, Adyel primary school, Canon Lawrence primary school, Lira Parents’ primary school and Sir Samuel Joe nursery and primary school.

“Educate 200 War and HIV/AIDS Orphaned Ugandan Girls” is a project that has given hope and a better future through education to more than 100 beneficiaries in northern Uganda, despite the hardships endured due to the absence of their biological parents who they lost either to HIV/AIDS or the 21 years Lords’ Resistance Army(LRA) rebel war.
Below is a detailed account of these project activities carried out in the months of July, August and September 2014.

Lunch fees payment

This quarter, lunch fees payment of 810, 800 were made to the different schools that PLA beneficiaries go to. The payment was made to enable the beneficiaries have lunch at the different schools they go. Because of this the beneficiaries have concentrated more in their school and education that worrying about hunger and food, reports from the various schools show that the beneficiaries are attending classes on a regular basis.

 

GIRLS CONTINOUS PERFORMANCE IN CLASS

The girls continue to perform to their best. Kadija Nebilla managed to score in 1st grade at Lango Quran primary school while Ejang Fibby and Enang Morine managed to score in 2nd grade at Sir Samuel Nursery and primary school, Achola Sumaya too scored in 2nd grade at Adyel primary school. With the mentioned grade, the girls have hopes to performing even better in their final examinations.
Other beneficiaries like Aguti Gloria, Ayugi Ketty, and Esther Apili are still trying their best in catching up, during the school term holidays the girls continued to have holiday studies, and this was so they can improve on their performance better in order to reach their dreams.

School monitoring visits

35 school monitoring visits were this quarter made to the different schools that were inclusive of Lira Modern primary school, Lango Quran Primary school, Adyel Primary school, Lira parents Primary School, Sir Samuel primary school, Canon Lawerence primary school and Lira primary school. The visits were made on a daily basis

This quarter the beneficiaries are studying harder as they prepare for their end of year examinations for the pupils in primary 5 and 6 while the pupils in primary 7 are studying hard to perform better in their primary Leaving examinations.
The primary leaving examinations are a gate pass for the beneficiaries to another level of education.
To excel in their examinations, the beneficiaries are consulting with their class and subject teachers as they also revise some of the old examinations papers of mock examinations

BENEFICARIES SEATING THEIR PRIMARY LEAVING EXAMINATIONS

7 beneficiaries will this year seat their Primary Leaving examinations in November.
For the beneficiaries that will complete primary Level, I will continue to identify organizations that support children especially girls in secondary and university level, as well as also continue to search call for proposals in the same category.
All the primary seven beneficiaries will receive success cards; this will be motivation for them to do their best knowing that there are people that care about them and their education

MORINE' STORY, HOPE IS A GOOD THING!

14-year old Morine was born to the late Okello Alfred and the late Amony Collin and she is now in care of her 37-year old paternal aunt Atyang Anna.

Morine is the head prefect at her school in Sir Samuel Joe nursery and primary school, this position was given to her due to the discipline, and her  excellent performance in school and especially the leadership skills that she  has portrayed.

During her free time Morine loves to do a lot of things which are inclusive of time spent in church.
“I love playing hand ball and singing, I also teach Sunday school children at our church in Ogena Christian church,” happily narrated Morine

Morine one of the beneficiaries who is will seat her primary leaving examinations this year at Sir Samuel Joe nursery and primary school.
In second term she managed to scored 2nd grade during the mocks examinations that she sat at the school

Morine parents were both killed by the rebels in 2000, “after their death, my grandfather tried to cater for me but he became helpless until aunt Anna took me up, but she can also hardly help. It is the church that provides for us but it’s also fading away,” sadly mentioned Morine.

Morine has 2 siblings but currently she doesn’t know where they are and who is supporting them, she continues to be grateful to PLA for the support that they have rendered her since 3 years  ago of her school when she was in primary 5.She is now in Primary seven.

“With the encouragement that I continuously get from PLA, I promise to read more and perform better now in my final examinations this November 2014,” said Morine

Morine will need further support in terms of school fees and scholastic materials in secondary school. Counseling will be one thing that she will continuously get from PLA offices.

I was the 1st out of 64 pupils in my class and though math is my best subject I don’t understand it from the school where I am but when my friends show me how a calculation is done,” said Morine

“I promise to perform better now that I will seat my Primary Leaving examinations this year”. Mentioned Morine.

Morine has been promised scholarship by one of the Indian business man in Lira, owner of Guru Nana an industry that produces shea butter.

As a gesture to give back to the communities in Lira, the industry supports education of the vulnerable children and this year Morine has been promised such a chance when she performs well in her primary Leaving Examinations at the end of this year.

PLA BENEFICARIES ACTIVE ON THE DAY OF THE AFRICAN CHILD

Platform for labour Action continues to provide support to 27 girls with school lunch, scholastic materials and psychosocial support in all aspects of their lives with support from Global Giving. The beneficiaries go to government owned schools whose funding for school fees mainly comes from the Ugandan government, the schools that the girls go include: Elia Olet primary school, Lira Modern primary school, Lira police primary school, Lira primary school, Starch Factory primary school, Lango Quran primary school, King James primary school, Railways primary school, Adyel primary school, Canon Lawrence primary school, Lira Parents’ primary school and Sir Samuel Joe nursery and primary school and the secondary school of Lira Town college.

This project has made a difference in the lives of so many girls in northern Uganda with access to education that has in turn built their self-esteem and enabled improved school performance through the continuous counseling and monitoring provided from Platform for Labour Action.

In this quarter of April, May and June 2014 there were various activities that were carried out in the project as highlighted below.

Lunch fees payment

This quarter, lunch fees payment of 810,800 were made to the different schools that PLA beneficiaries go to enable them access meals while at school.  As a result, the beneficiaries are able to concentrate in class and through our monitoring visits; their teachers are reporting regular school attendance by the children.

Celebration of the day of the African child

This year the national day of the African Child was commemorated in Lira District at lira Golf course.

PLA also took part in organizing and participating in the Day of the African Child celebrations at Lira Golf course. PLA further facilitated 30 children (6male 24 female) create awareness to over 3500 stakeholders on child labour and education through 2 creative dances and 1 skit. PLA beneficiaries;  Fibby,Sandra,  Nebila , Lucky, Ketty  and Morine were actively involved in the celebrations aas well as organizing their fellow pupils to commemorate the event. We were recognized as a key player in child protection and won 2 awards, one on Best Programming on Child Protection and another for the Day of African Child (best of the best) for the year 2014 Tumaini awards. The theme of the DAC celebration was ‘A child- friendly, quality, free and compulsory Education in Uganda’.

This year’s celebration was also integrating the launch of the Uganda child help Line (116), an outreach that links children in need of care and protection, to services and resources,” which includes counseling, rescue, withdrawal and rehabilitation, health and justice services.

The beneficiaries were happy to join other children in this day’s celebrations and one  Morine noted that, “I have never performed before many people, including the minister himself, I was scared and excited at the same time, but most of all glad that I was part of the celebrations”, concluded Morine, who is currently in primary seven at Sir Samuel Joe primary school.

Distributed scholastic materials

Distributed scholastic materials to 26 PLA School going beneficiaries at PLA Lira The girls were appreciative of the materials received from PLA and Global Giving and that the materials will help maintain proper records of their class work for the whole year and hence enable revision of their notes.

One girl Sumaya mentioned that, “I have been lacking books with in which ton write my class notes,I am so glad that I also have a book in which to write my summaries,” she stated.

School monitoring visits 

32 school visits were made this quarter to the different schools to monitor PLA beneficiaries’ attendance, performances in class. The teachers have been of great help to the beneficiaries through encouraging them to work hard as well as sharing with PLA staff the different challenges of the beneficiaries.

During the visits, we were able to counsel the beneficiaries as well as encourage them to work hard, how to balance housework and school work, how to manage their school time, extensive reading, researching and consulting with their teachers. Most of the girls believed that they would pass their examination except for the 2 girls; Ketty  and Zaitun who were sick during the examination period.

One of the girls Nebila  had performed well and was in the 1st position out of 67 pupils in her primary seven at Lango Quran primary school.

Home visits

Following our school monitoring visits, 4 home visits were also made to PLA beneficiaries;  Sandra, Lyn, Patience, Sumaya and Harriet  to further assess the challenges of these beneficiaries. The visits to the different homes were to meet and talk to the guardians to the girls to forge a way forward.

Conclusion

This quarter opened a wide door for our beneficiaries since they were exposed at the national platform on the day of the African Child and show cased their entertaining abilities. In addition, during the event, the beneficiaries were able to interact with and develop friendships with children from school in and around lira which we will help nurture and develop their academic prowess. Also the children were excited about the timely receipt of their scholaristic materials and their lunch fees which would enable them concentrate more in school. This has been witnessed with improvement in their performance in their school work this term during the school monitoring visits.
