Ashley Shuyler - Founder and Executive Director
Ashley is the founder of AfricAid. She first journeyed to Tanzania with her family in 1996 at the age of eleven. Struck by the poverty she saw while there, particularly among children her own age, she became determined to do something to help. She founded AfricAid in 2001. As AfricAid’s Executive Director, she is responsible for the development and oversight of AfricAid’s programs in Tanzania.
Frances Vavrus - Assistant Professor, University of Minnesota
Dr. Vavrus' research has focused on international education and development, including AIDS and educational opportunity in Africa, & gender relations in rural Tanzania. In 2006, she received the Fulbright scholarship and spent a year with her family in Tanzania, continuing her research and developing the Teaching In Action training program.
