The Teaching in Action (TIA) teacher training program trains teachers in active teaching methods, improving the educational and professional futures of thousands of Tanzanian students.
TIA aims to improve the educational outcome for the thousands of Tanzanian students who fail their national examinations by conducting workshops for secondary school teachers in which they concretely learn how to utilize more student-centered, active teaching methods that engage students' critical thinking abilities. With greater capacity to think analytically, students are better prepared to pass their national examinations, compete in a scarce job market, and become self-sufficient.
During the workshops, teachers learn how to use active teaching methods through demonstrations, case studies, and group work. They are given the tools to mentor their colleagues in their home schools, thereby reaching thousands of students.
With the expansion of this program throughout all of Tanzania, beginning in 2013, TIA will ultimately impact tens of thousands Tanzanian secondary schools students every year, leading to improved educational and professional futures among the next generation of Tanzania's workers and leaders.
