Summary

This youth peer education project is an innovative approach to addressing HIV/AIDS, gender and life skills education through sports games, theatre, community forums and informal school discussions.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

In Kibera slum, Nairobi, half of young people cannot afford to complete secondary school, and when available, formal education often fails to provide the life skills/opportunities necessary for alleviating poverty. Kicking AIDS Out focuses on youth providing education for youth around issues of reproductive health, gender, and life skills which are elsewhere ignored, using sports and theatre to increase the level of knowledge and self confidence, while providing scholarships for education.

How will this project solve this problem?

The Kicking AIDS Out peer educators use educational sports games, theatre, community and informal school forums to engage and educate youth on issues such as HIV/AIDS, gender, substance abuse, FGM, rape, peer pressure and life in Kibera slum.

Potential Long Term Impact

The project aims to educate 1000 Kiberan youth annually on reproductive health and life skills necessary to leading a healthy life in Kibera while providing secondary and post secondary educational scholarships for all 32 Kicking AIDS Out members.

Project Message

"Before I joined KAO I didn’t know myself, or anything about HIV/AIDS and drug abuse and I was very shy, but since the training I’m not shy and I can now teach about HIV/AIDS and life in Kibera."
- Josephine Adhiambo, Kicking AIDS Out youth peer educator.
