NWF's Adopt-a-Wildlife-Acre program solves serious conflict between wildlife and livestock in areas of dangerous overlap in the Yellowstone National Park area. We accomplish this by offsetting local ranchers' expenses to retire vulnerable grazing allotments and relocate their livestock to safer lands.
Yellowstone National Park is home to some of the most magnificent animals in America. However, once iconic species like the gray wolf, grizzly bear, bighorn sheep and bison leave the protected borders of the park, their death rates rise dramatically! These animals' migration patterns take them outside of the park, where they are in close proximity to grazing ranch lands. This dangerous crossroads poses serious mortality risk to livestock and wildlife from both animal and human conflict.
NWF's Adopt-a-Wildlife-Acre program solves this conflict through a market-based approach to conservation. We sufficiently compensate ranchers to retire high-risk grazing allotments and relocate their livestock to safe grazing lands.
This unique program recognizes the economic value of livestock grazing permits and fairly compensates ranchers for retiring their leases. As grazing allotments are often on public lands, a retirement requires voluntary participation from both public and private parties, and only happens when all are satisfied- a true win-win-win program!
