Sexual Health Outreach to 1000 youth in Uganda

The Sexual Health Education, Outreach and Intervention (EOI) project will positively impact over 1000 adolescent youth in the war-torn Nwoya District of Northern Uganda. The project includes Sexual Reproductive Health Outreaches to schools and a Sanitary Pad Distribution, which provides over 80 girls with reusable sanitary pads so that they are able to attend school consistently. These programs will provide crucial services to an area that is attempting to recover from the recent LRA conflicts

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Communities in rural northern Uganda are facing the dire after-effects of LRA violence. The rates of HIV are much higher in these areas compared to the rest of Uganda, as are the amount of disabled people that lack access to necessary services. Due to the failure of the government and schools alone to address the needs of the region, the Nwoya Youth Center's programs provide a crucial support system for adolescents (which comprise over 50% of Uganda's population).

How will this project solve this problem?

The Sexual Health EOI project will provide essential counseling services, education and resources to improve the health of the recovering population of the Nwoya District. Young girls will have access to sanitary pads to avoid missing school and falling behind. Sexual reproductive health outreaches will be conducted to both in-school and out-of-school adolescents. Overall, over 1000 youth will be positively impacted.

Potential Long Term Impact

By using preventive methods to lower HIV rates and improve the overall health of the youth in the Nwoya District, this project is central in fighting the negative after-effects of the LRA violence that ravaged the area. Adolescents will reduce high-risk behavior, girls will stay in school, and HIV-positive youth will have access to necessary resources and counseling. The resulting increase in the health of the youth will improve the overall productivity of the town and shape a positive future.
