Academy Camp 2013 Summer 1 Tokyo (Aug.12-16)

Saying good-bye to a student leader

Please find a Japanese version of this report here.

Last month, we held three camps for children living in Fukushima. The second one was held from August 12 to 16, 2013, in Tokyo, largely funded by GlobalGiving donors, an anonymous couple, and Kanagawa Children's Future Fund. 29 elementary and junior-high school students from Fukushima participated in the camp.

We stayed at National Olympics Memorial Youth Center, where we held Academy Camp 2012 Summer Term 1 last year. We had a lot of activities including playing games using Kinect with people from Microsoft Japan, making stop motion animation with students from Future University Hakodate, singing a cappella with singers Mr. Yoichi Kitayama (Gospellers) and Mr. Osamu Tago (TRY-TONE), becoming news reporters with journalist Mr. Jun Hori, studying lives in Edo era with historian Mr. Masaaki Osawa, and cooking chickens with Mr. Ryu Hirai (in a BBQ place in Odaiba, Tokyo). We also conducted an orienteering in Yoyogi Park, and O-Edo Digital Orienteering in which we tried to discover old Edo left in today's Tokyo.

For the concluding program, journalist Mr. Hori came back to help us making news movies to report facts and opinions about the camp we experienced. In our humble opinion, Academy Camp is some kind of "enabling field", in which children and adults can experience things they have never thought they would be able to.

HELP US KEEP GOING!

Please help us enable and empower children in Fukushima. Your continuing support will be much appreciated.
