Deepening Commitments To Our Community Partners

By Erik Ferry | Development Associate

First of all, Happy New Year to all of you volunteers, parents, donors, partners, and friends. May this update find you all healthy, vaccinated (if your system can take that), and safe --

This report bulletin catches us all up on our doings during Fall Semester, '22 with a word on what we believe lies ahead for g2W, the girls we serve this Spring.

We retained our partnership with The Primary School (TPS) begun early this year and expanded into KIPP High School, and began this ‘22-’23 School Year with the following programming suite:

  1. Theater Arts - most lead roles and executive positions on the stage are held by men, but with Leelee Jackson’s guidance, girls Of-Color at TPS learned that they have what it takes to exhibit leadership on- and offstage (continuing into Spring Semester, ‘23);
  2. Wellness Education - youth, and girls in particular, are subjected to a good deal of misleading advertising concerning diet, health, and appearance. g2W countered misinformation with practical advice on fitness, healthy eating, positive socialization, and emotional/psychological well-being through nonsectarian mindfulness practice and other self-supporting/self-grounding approaches;
  3. With support from the San Mateo County Parks Foundation, g2W organized an excursion for 30 TPS students and their families to Menlo Park’s Flood Park in mid-October. COVID had shut down a new outdoor family well-being and fitness walks series in our regional parks, and we hope to restart this activity during Spring, ‘23 Semester.
  4. At KIPP High School, we developed a self-actualization and self-esteem building activity for low-income young women Of-Color dubbed, ‘Be The Boss.’ The series introduced participants to effective public speaking, building interview skills, resume development, and other abilities which will support their professional and academic excellence.

Program Feedback/Responses. We engaged in another iteration of our program evaluations at the end of Fall Semester '22, as we typically do for each semester and at the end of Summer Sessions. In doing so we reviewed the evaluation responses and feedback from parents, the girls themselves, staff, program specialists, and supporters over the Winter Break. Our aim is of course to fine-tune g2W programming for Spring Semester 2023 with The Primary School teaching and administrative staff.

Parent evaluation surveys, along with staff and partnering organization feedback, underpinned and reflected the recorded verbal responses from our young participants and shared with our Board. Given the dislocations of the past couple of years, g2W is gratified that we can still deliver programming which feels meaningful and positive to those whom we mean to serve.

We recently did some polling of families and consultation with San Mateo County Health Dept. before deciding to go ahead with our first in-person Margaret Wright 5K Fun & Fitness Run/Walk since the pandemic, scheduled for March of this year. It will be good to gather at-scale again in a way that we've not since 2018! Five year . . .

And before we know it, we'll be planning the Summer Session 2023!

In the meantime, please know that whatever your role with Girls To Women . . . as a volunteer, parent, donor, or community partner, your role is an essential part of a community-based effort that continues to function for the girls and their families whom we serve only because people like you care. Thanks again to all!

Yours In And With Community,

Patricia Foster
