Academic Support & Mentoring for Underserved Girls

Helping one another

Helping one another
During the after-school program Eastside College Preparatory volunteers provide 1-on-1 help with homework. Here a girl in the Girls to Women program jumps in to help a second girl. This is not uncommon as the girls like to help one another whenever possible.

Reading for fun

Reading for fun
At Girls to Women, we highly emphasize the love for reading. During "homework time" if the girls do not have any assigned homework for the day, they read to themselves or out-loud to volunteers.

Role models

Role models
It is important for the girls to see older girls who have grown up in the same community that they have, who have attended the same schools, and who are in the path towards college. The volunteers from nearby Eastside College Preparatory School do not only serve as tutors, but also as role models.

Teamwork

Teamwork
A number of the girls who come to us are at the same class in school. We encourage them to collaborate on assignments, when appropriate.
