Helping one another

Helping one another
During the after-school program Eastside College Preparatory volunteers provide 1-on-1 help with homework. Here a girl in the Girls to Women program jumps in to help a second girl. This is not uncommon as the girls like to help one another whenever possible. (view small | med | large | orig)

Reading for fun

Reading for fun
At Girls to Women, we highly emphasize the love for reading. During "homework time" if the girls do not have any assigned homework for the day, they read to themselves or out-loud to volunteers. (view small | med | large | orig)

Role models

Role models
It is important for the girls to see older girls who have grown up in the same community that they have, who have attended the same schools, and who are in the path towards college. The volunteers from nearby Eastside College Preparatory School do not only serve as tutors, but also as role models. (view small | med | large | orig)

Teamwork

Teamwork
A number of the girls who come to us are at the same class in school. We encourage them to collaborate on assignments, when appropriate. (view small | med | large | orig)

Fresh and alert and ready to learn

Fresh and alert and ready to learn
We allow the girls to come in, relax a little, get a healthy snack, and let go of some of their formal classroom day for awhile before settling them in with their homework assignments or other academic practices which their parents have requested. (view small | med | large | orig)

Learning from a role model

Learning from a role model
High-achieving high-school students from nearby Eastside College Preparatory School complement our program staff and provide, as-needed, 1-on-1 and bilingual tutoring support for all girls. (view small | med | large | orig)

Getting attention

Getting attention
Experienced Group Activity Leaders know how to make reading fun and engaging . . . girls take it from there with their own enthusiasm. (view small | med | large | orig)

Concentration

Concentration
By providing a focused time and space for academic support, we make it easier for girls to attend fully to their assignments before moving on to other activities. Parents are always asking us to help their girls address scholastic challenges, and we facilitate their practice in areas where they need support beyond any one immediate homework assignment.
