Chaiten Volcano eruption in Chile
In May of 2008 a volcano near the small town of Chatien, Chile began to erupt for the first time in 9,000 years. Virtually all of the community's 5,000 residents had to be evacuated, residents taking refuge in neighboring towns and cities outside the reach of the destructive lava, ash, and smoke.
