The Cambodian Children's Fund (CCF) Food Program has been a tremendous success over the last year. We feed an average of 800 children from the surrounding communities every evening. This number has drastically increased the demands on our staff. In order to accommodate the amount of time, energy and production needed to continue this program, our staff needs a proper kitchen to prepare the food for the kids. Future donations made to this project over $5000 will go to the Child Nutrition Program.
Steung Meanchey is an industrial neighborhood on the southwestern outskirts of Phnom Penh that served as Cambodia's largest trash dump. While in production, thousands of people scoured the dump on a daily basis in search of recyclable materials that could be sold for an average daily income of approximately $0.50. Although the dump was closed in 2009, three thousand families continue to live on the site. These families lack such basic needs as food, water, sanitation, and shelter.
Every night kids pour into CCF's Community Center to receive vitamin-enriched bread, food, soup, milk and nutritional supplement drinks to underfed children. Our Community Center also offers fortified bread for families to take home. Currently, there is no kitchen. Food for the 800+ children and their families is prepared in a 3' X 4' space that includes a hot plate, sink, and small counter space. Our proposed kitchen will alleviate the space constraints and allow CCF to feed more people.
CCF runs a broad spectrum of fully integrated community services that collectively offer the strongest possible safety net for families in crisis. Every outreach project we develop flows from the realization and acceptance that the 1,500 children in CCF's care have links and roots that need nurturing if they themselves are to fully prosper and grow. Our Kitchen Project will play a large role in expanding a safety net that will allow our students to hone their potential to emerge as leaders.
