Vineet and Sunita (name changed) adopted 6 month old Suma last year. Both, being very fair, there was some apprehension about Suma’s dark skin. The parents wondered whether Suma could draw unnecessary attention and curiosity, when older. I remember re-assuring him- ‘don’t worry Vineet; very soon Suma will look like you! Most adopted children do- after a point of time there is no difference!’A very excited Vineet called me last week. ‘You know, Pallavi’, he said, ‘we have just returned from a wedding in Delhi. Most of our relatives were seeing Suma for the first time. They just loved her. The highlight however, was our meeting with a paternal grand-aunt who we were seeing after almost a decade. While she cooed over Suma, she added ‘the child has taken after both of you! the almond eyes are undoubtedly Sunita’s and the blunt nose is yours! Also, after the gap of 2 generations, the skin colour seems to have come back. She has inherited your great- grandmother’s complexion! Well, genes do matter! Suma has mine!! “ said Vineet.
