Summary
Father Paul Satkunanayagam SJ and his associates have formulated a 3-step plan to effectively respond to the needs of the people of
Batticaloa.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Large refugee settlements in Batticaloa and nearby Manresa in the countryside are currently each assisting over 2000 people displaced by the tsunami. There are other such centers at all the Batticaloa schools as well as temples, mosques and churches.
How will this project solve this problem?
1. Respond immediately to the emergency.
2. Gradually break up these large settlements to prevent the spread of disease. People will be moved back to smaller settlements.
3. Resettlement of the people in their home communities.
Potential Long Term Impact
This project will meet the immediate need for shelter while working to prevent disease. Eventual resettlement will allow people to rebuild their communities and cope with the pscyhological trauma of the disaster.
Project Message
Batticaloa has been hard hit by the tsunami...these larger settlements have been created for giving shelter, food and medical support to the displaced.
