Our sincerest thanks to all of the donors who helped us to reach our fundraising goal for The Children Left Behind. The project has been and continues to be an overwhelming success, as we continue to touch the lives of children in Hidalgo. In fact, The Children Left Behind was recently recognized for its excellence by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), which awarded IMIFAP - Yo quiero, yo puedo the Juscelino Kubischeck Award of Merit for Regional Development in Latin America and the Caribbean 2011 specifically for this project! There were 337 nominations and four winners in total. IMIFAP – Yo quiero, yo puedo is the only winner from Mexico and shares the award in the social, cultural, and scientific category with the Salesian Project for the Street Children of Ecuador. This award highlights our work with The Children Left Behind, which we could not have done without the support of our GlobalGiving donors.

Through our most recent evaluation activities, we have found a positive and important impact in the promoters, teachers, parents and particularly in the target population: infants and children. The program has achieved changes at the individual and professional level in the promoters who received the workshops and has contributed to improved relationships among members of the community; mothers, fathers, caretakers, teachers and children. Between the promoters and the parents the program has helped build a network of support aimed at promoting child development and improving school performance. The parents who have participated in the program have undergone changes that have allowed themselves to better know and value their communication and interaction with their children and partners, getting more involved in their children’s development and school activities. Amongst the children, their participation in the program has allowed them to develop skills such as self-knowledge, communication, decision making and creativity. Importantly for the children in this community with high levels of outward migration, they have shown improvements in expression of their emotions and communication with their families. The infants from 0 to 3 years in the program are now receiving the appropriate stimulation for their development that is improving their motor and language development; improvements have been noted in their socialization and recognition skills. Within the community the program has developed mutual support networks and increased corporation among members to mitigate the negative effects of migration upon children and provide them with a favorable development environment.

Through interviews with teachers, parents, and caregivers of the children who participated in our programs, we found that they were best able to express the changes that occurred in themselves and in the children:

“It looks like they have accepted themselves more, they have accepted themselves as they are.”

“They do things not because they have to...but because they want to do them. They have changed a little, and it has helped us a lot in maintaining our rules.”

“They have started to express how they feel, that they miss their father and that they feel sad or that they celebrated their birthday and got gifts, and that they feel happy. I use these situations to ask, in general: how do you feel on this occasion and how on that one?”

We hope that all of you that have donated to The Children Left Behind will consider making more contributions to IMIFAP - Yo quiero, yo puedo projects. By donating to IMIFAP, you can still support indigenous women to market their products, support microfinance for marginalized communities, and contribute to drug prevention and a culture of peace in Mexico. We will also be launching a new project on GlobalGiving soon to help support our efforts in Tenejapa, Chiapas, where we are providing life skills and health education to rural indigenous children.

Thank you again, and we hope that you will continue to support IMIFAP - Yo quiero, yo puedo!

_________________________________________________________________________

We were working very hard for the opening of the second year of the center in Orizabita, which happened on march 4th, and we will continue to follow up during this month. All the members of the community have been working a lot for this, and in IMIFAP we continue to support them to make it happen.

The center in Los Remedios, Hidalgo, is being renewed. During this month, the community was very busy painting the building on the inside with many colors, and IMIFAP has been providing new equipment (games and books) for the children.

The centers’ success has been incredible, and in order to celebrate it, there will be a big event for its’ first anniversary and the beginning of its’ second year running. With this, we celebrate the effort of everyone at IMIFAP and in the community who have been very involved and have worked very hard to give these children a better life and better opportunities. We’re on the right track, and with your support, we have managed to give these communities, and their children, an incredible opportunity for their development.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

<img src='http://cloud.globalgiving.org/pfil/4342/IMG_4225_Small.JPG' alt='IMIFAP facilitator provides feedback to promoters'style='margin: 5px;'/>

IMIFAP facilitator provides feedback to promoters

The first month of 2011 has been a busy month for the “Children left behind” project. Promoters at the Development Center in Orizabita are learning new techniques to bring to the classroom this year, and IMIFAP-“I want to, I can” is one step closer to opening up the second Center in Los Remedios, Hidalgo!

Returning from the holiday break, the promoters in Orizabita took a refresher training this month. The training also touched on new topics such as violence and bullying in schools that will help them provide the children with even better attention this year. We expect the Center to open its doors again for activities in February.

IMIFAP-“I want to, I can” began training the local promoters in Los Remedios. They improved their life skills and developed tools and knowledge needed to run the new “I want to, I can” Development Center. The promoters are excited to use the interactive didactic techniques they learned in the training to provide the infants and children in their community with stimulating educational experiences to support the children’s integral development.

With the new promoters trained, your donation will help purchase games and materials to supply the new Center. The children of Orizabita and Los Remedios, Hidalgo thank you for your support!

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

<img src='http://cloud.globalgiving.org/pfil/4342/IMG_4220_Small.jpg' alt='Promoters review techniques in a workshop'style='margin: 5px;'/>

Promoters review techniques in a workshop

<img src='http://cloud.globalgiving.org/pfil/4342/IMG_3583_Small.JPG' alt='Mmm...delicious legumes!'style='margin: 5px;'/>

Mmm...delicious legumes!

This November, the children at the “I want to, I can” Center learned about healthy eating habits and members of the community became more involved in the program. Read on to find out how!

With diabetes on the rise in Mexico, the “I want to, I can” Development Center in Orizaba, Hidalgo emphasized the importance of eating well during “Healthy eating month”. Each day throughout November, a promoter brought a different healthy lunch for the boys and girls at the Center. When IMIFAP-“I want to, I can” visited, the children were chowing down on legumes and learning about the importance of eating a variety of healthy foods.

Back in August, IMIFAP-“I want to, I can” held a life skills training with about 30 caretakers who expressed interest in participating in future workshops. In response, the Center’s promoters organized a series of talks that they themselves will put on. Among other topics, they plan to discuss the issue of violence with men in the community.

Thank you for your continued support of the boys and girls of the “I want to, I can” Development Center.

_______________________________________________________

October Project Update: Development Center in the News!

Recently, IMIFAP’s “I want to, I can” programs were featured in a national news report in Mexico! Check out the report (in Spanish) to learn more about the "I want to, I can” Development Center and to see footage of children taking part in the Center’s activities.

Using the Center’s “I want to, I can” philosophy, IMIFAP has implemented its life skills programs in public schools throughout Mexico. The news report applauds the results achieved by these school-based programs and features the Development Center in Hidalgo. In particular it highlights the center’s success working with children of migrants to improve their education, self esteem, development, and overall quality of life.

Our successes are being recognized! Please help us make the program even stronger by giving a recurring monthly donation to the children at the “I want to, I can” Development Center.

__________________________________________________________________

Links:

“I want to I can” Development Center in the news!

August Project Report - Caretakers get involved

<img src='http://cloud.globalgiving.org/pfil/4342/Boys_outside_the_center_Small.jpg' alt='Happy boys sit outside the center'style='margin: 5px;'/>

Happy boys sit outside the center

August was an exciting month at the Center in anticipation of the start of the school year. Some recent activities include:

With the start of the 2010-2011 school year, more school-age children have been invited to participate in the program. These older children will participate in after-school activities at the Center, while the activities for younger children will also continue.

IMIFAP held an informative workshop for 30 parents and guardians of participating children, in which we explained the activities and goals of the Center and did some life skills training. The caretakers are now really motivated to be more involved in the Center´s activities and told us that they would like more workshops to learn how to better care for the children. We hope to provide more adult trainings in the coming months in order to promote the comprehensive development of the children outside of their participation at the Center.

The plans to open a new “I want to, I can” Development Center in the nearby community of Panales are underway. We have strengthened our contacts with local government authorities and aim to open the Center in the first months of 2011.

Thank you for your continued support!

<img src='http://cloud.globalgiving.org/pfil/4342/Caretakers_accompany_children_at_the_center_Small.JPG' alt='Caretakers accompany their children at the center'style='margin: 5px;'/>

Caretakers accompany their children at the center

July Project Update – New kids and a new community

<img src='http://cloud.globalgiving.org/pfil/4342/I_want_to_I_can_Center_Small.JPG' alt='Motivated promoter works with girls at the center'style='margin: 5px;'/>

Motivated promoter works with girls at the center

The project continues to expand its reach! New children are participating in the activities, some of whom travel to Orizabita from other communities to take part. At the moment, the program is helping 168 boys and girls up to 9 years old of age. Advancements in this last month include:

We have continued to provide accompaniment visits to each of the promoters who facilitate the activities, in order to identify both strengths and areas for improvement in their work. Afterward we held an additional workshop to strengthen skills in areas such as teamwork and negotiation as a means of reinforcing their motivation.

We are currently looking for contacts in Panales, a new community in the state of Hidalgo. Panales is located very close to Orizabita. By working with both communities, we want to compare the level of child development between the two communities to scientifically evaluate the results of our program. We are also looking to open a new “I want to, I can” Development Center in Panales at the beginning of 2011.

The project continues to grow because of you. Thank you so much for your donations!

------------------------------------------

<img src='http://cloud.globalgiving.org/pfil/4342/Center_Opening_ceremony_Small.JPG' alt='Opening ceremony for the "I want to, I can" Center'style='margin: 5px;'/>

Opening ceremony for the "I want to, I can" Center

We are excited to share that during April and May, we trained 35 local promoters to work with the children in the community of Orizabita, Hidalgo State. And on May 28 we inaugurated the local “Yo quiero, yo puedo” (I want to, I can) Development Center in which these promoters will work. In the opening ceremony the local elders blessed the Center with an ancient indigenous ceremony (see photo), so we can expect the Center to be very successful!

During the first week after the Center opened, 139 children signed up to participate in it's activities. With our support the local promoters organize these educational and developmental activities for children 0 to nine years of age and their parents.

Finally, in June we took initial measurements of the children. This is part of the evaluation activities and will allow us to later see the impact of this phase of the project. Look forward to hearing more about the results in future updates!

We want to thank you, our supporters; all this work is possible because of your help!

-----------------------------------------------------

<img src='http://cloud.globalgiving.org/pfil/4342/I_want_to_I_can_Center_Small.JPG' alt='Materials at the "I want to, I can" Center'style='margin: 5px;'/>

Materials at the "I want to, I can" Center

<img src='http://cloud.globalgiving.org/pfil/4342/I_want_to_I_can_Center_2_Small.JPG' alt='Promoters work with children at the Center'style='margin: 5px;'/>

Promoters work with children at the Center

<img src='http://cloud.globalgiving.org/pfil/4342/Children_left_behind_boys_Small.JPG' alt='Boys at the ceremony, beneficiaries of the Center'style='margin: 5px;'/>

Boys at the ceremony, beneficiaries of the Center

Links:

Check out our website

The new program was received well by the community and together the decision was made to begin training workshops in April. In recent weeks we have been working with community groups, such as the local authorities and a group of mothers, fathers and care takers to plan the implementation activities. Our facilitators are finalizing the development the didactic materials, including, manuals, guides, books, games, etc. for the three target age groups, 0 – 3 years, 3 – 6 years, and 6 – 8 years.

We are excited about the progress and can’t wait to share more with you next month. Thank you again for all your support, this program would not be possible without you!
