Incense powder making training to prison inmates

A Sambrani (incense powder) making training was organized by New Life in the month of October 2011 to 24 inmates of Special prison for women in Trichirappalli district, Tamil Nadu. The programme was inaugurated by Ms. Jayabharathi, superintendent of Special prison for women, Trichirappalli. 24 young and interested inmates (Lifer) were selected and training was given to them.

The curriculum of the training includes motivating the inmates, raw materials to be used, ratio of the raw materials in the mixture, demonstration of making the sambrani, hands on training on making the sambrani and front and back end tie ups available.

After the release the trainees can earn Rs. 100/- per day if they start doing this income generation activity. All the trainees are happy since the training is easily learnable and requires fewer skills. They are also happy that the capital required is very less and that they can earn on their own and can be independent.

Mrs.Saroja is going to be released in the month of December 2011. She was much interested in this training. She was arrested for her husband’s murder. She was a home maker, and she was dependent on her husband. Her husband had an illegal affair with another lady. One day Saroja saw her husband with that lady and started fighting with him. During the fight, Saroja pushed her husband and he fell down on a stone, got injured and died. For this she got arrested and got punishment as a lifer. She does not have any one to support her. So she was afraid about her future. After getting this training she got confidence that she will earn Rs.100/- day by doing this business.

'I have peace now!' says Santhi

56 motivated women inmates of the Special Prison for Women, Trichirappalli, were taught to produce washing powder. They were trained in the different qualities of the washing powder, the raw materials used for the preparation of the powder, the cost of producing it and the profit margin that can be set. All the women participated with enthusiasm and were asking a series of questions on the front and back end tie-ups (purchase of raw materials and sale of the washing powder made), pricing, packing, branding, marketing, etc.

Mrs. Santhi (age 38) from Trichy, who was arrested for illicit liquor selling expressed her gratitude to the trainer for showing her a new way. Santhi’s husband died when she was 37 and she is left in the streets with her two small boys. She did not know what to do to feed her children. It was at that time, she met Saroja a woman who sells illicit liquor. Saroja introduced Santhi to the liquor manufacturer. He employed her and gave her sufficient money and with this money Santhi can take care of her two children. But she was not happy with what she was doing. It was then the police arrested her and she was sentenced.

While attending the training in the Prison, Santhi made up her mind to involve in washing powder manufacturing and stop selling liquor. She expressed her gratitude to New Life and its trainer. She says she will shift to a new place after her release and start making the washing powder and sell it. She is confident that she can sell the powder she makes. New Life is happy that Santhi now has ‘Shanthi’ (Peace).

We thank you dear donors who make such wonderful things happen!

WISHING YOU ALL A HAPPY NEW YEAR.

We are overwhelmed that all the 28 trainees who attended the poly bag nursery training are now in possession of a certificate. The certificates were issued to them in a function on 2nd October, the Gandhi Jayanthi Day. by the Superintendent of Police, Trichirappalli. You can see a trainee receiving the certificate in the photo. Our trainer handed over the raised seedlings to the prison superintendent for planting them inside the prison.

Mr. Vaiyapuri who learnt to raise the nursery says he will have his nursery once he gets discharged and wants to specialize in ornamental plants. He says he found happiness when he planted the seeds, watered them and when he saw them grow and being handed over for planting. It gives me a feeling of constructive power and channelises myenergy positively, says Mr.Vaiyapuri.
