We have so many exciting events this season. We just successfully completed our 5th annual SomerGreen Festival, in partnership with the City of Somerville, our first ever Boston Tree Party apple tree planting, our river clean-up with the Mystic River Watershed Association and the Friends of the Mystic River, a garden raising, and a bike drive with Bikes Not Bombs. And that was just on ONE day! So thank you to everyone who has participated so far, and welcome to all our new partners who are about to embark upon greening initiatives with Groundwork Somerville. Read on to find out about some upcoming events this spring.

Every day I question if we are doing the right thing to have so many events - yes, it makes sense to work collaboratively to do clean-ups and bike drives, and youth-led gardens. But are we being noticed for the work that we do? As an Executive Director, I constantly analyze this. And you know what? We finally did get noticed! Yes folks - THE White House Blog did a post about Groundwork Somerville! Check it out here, and make sure to email the White House and let them know that you support GWS. After an amazing seven weeks of biking around the city, visiting farms, designing a new garden, harvesting and maintaining four garden spaces, and organizing an amazing youth summit, we are done!

The good news is that the fall Green Team begins in just a few weeks! You'll be able to see us STILL riding bikes, assisting Groundwork Lawrence at their Spicket River Clean-up (September 11, Lawrence MA), visiting Groundwork Springfield for a service day, and hosting a series of educational energy efficiency fairs!

We can't wait to get going again and appreciate all of the support you've been able to give us over the past year.

Thanks!

Links:

Green Team page

Green Team starts on Tuesday!

We are so excited to be able to bring on 18 (yes, that's right 18!) high school students this summer who will focus on three topics: Urban Agriculture, Sustainable Landscaping and Community Planning

Each team is also staffed with a Supervisor and a young Assistant Supervisor (2 of the 3 are past Green Team members!).

Watch out for the bikes, green t-shirts and smiling faces as you are walking through Somerville this summer.

We are also starting our FIRST EVER Mystic River Green Team, supervised by our past National Park Preserver job training team member Joey Baldassari. Watch out for the BRIGHT ORANGE t-shirts on the river as you drive by all summer.

This year we are focusing on three ideas:

1) Urban Agriculture
2) Community land-use planning
3) Sustainable Agriculture

In partnership with the Somerville Housing Authority, the Minute Man National Historical Park, the Somerville Community Growing Center and Community Corridor Planning (another collaborative program of Groundwork Somerville), we will be working 20 hours each week for seven weeks creating sustainable communities!

Congratulations to our THREE Supervisors and THREE Assistant Supervisors (one Tufts student and two former Green Teamers). We are so excited to move forward with an amazing summer of building sustainable communities through partnership!

Links:

Groundwork website

Green Team members are now responsible for ensuring that local residents' compostable materials are picked up weekly as part of our newest program, Somerville Soil Cycle, our resident compost pick-up program.

The youth team is responsible for: picking up the compostable materials ON BIKE, by pulling a bike cart full of buckets behind them; maintaining the compost bins at a local garden space; and doing outreach for the program.

This successful program currently has 12 subscribers for the winter months, with the goal of engaging at least 30 come summer.

Just wanted to let you know that the Groundwork Somerville Green Team has officially begun their parks and playgrounds assessments! After finishing their own assessment tool, which includes people counts, access to healthy foods, and condition of equipment, they have begun assessing playgrounds, to be completed this year! In 2010, they will continue with the parks in Somerville. Stay tuned for information regarding our April presentation to the City of Somerville.

Don't forget to participate in the Give More - Get More Challenge! GlobalGiving will match up to 50% of donations until December 1. Donate through our home page.
