After 10 years of providing technology education for rural communities and training over 30,000, YTF will build a "green" learning center, a paradigm of sustainability and responsibility in the area.
The donated building housing the Owerri Digital Village was taken over, leaving up to 50,000 community members without their local tech hub. The New Owerri Digital Village (NODV) building will address this need for a community "hub". NODV will generate its own electricity from solar power, supplementing the erratic, unreliable supply from the national grid. Beneficiaries are poor youth, the un- or under-employed and rural women often at the very bottom of the economic pyramid.
Curriculum of age-based programs, TechKids, TechTeens and TechCommunities, centered on demonstrating opportunities technology creates for communities and individuals. Interns recruited and educated on sustainability during building’s development.
NODV will demonstrate the benefit of sustainable design on the environment and basic services to the poor, while empowering young people and their communities to use technology as a tool in education and to improve the quality of the work force.
