This project provides 50 farming families in rural Honduras with the training and tools to overcome poverty while restoring our planet's tropical forests.
Sustainable Harvest Int'l (SHI) hires and trains residents that understand the local geography and culture to become agricultural field trainers. Skills learned from field trainers allow participants to provide for their families, while profitably remaining on their farms without destroying more forest. The target population is rural, subsistence farmers and indigenous communities. In addition to working with individual families, SHI also works with women's groups, cooperatives and rural schools
Participants learn first and foremost how to sustainably feed their families using one piece of land. Organic gardening practices are a focal point, followed by broader environmental projects and income-generating endeavors.
SHI’s impact continues to be deeply felt in the day to day lives of rural families and communities. Some families working with SHI have seen their income levels rise by as much as 800%, while using techniques that permit a better quality of life.
