GlobalGiving.org: Completing 2 Libraries for 4000 Nigeria Students

I was in the school from October 10-17, 2011. I was able to personally inspect how far they have gone with the cataloguing of books. On my recommendation books having about 30 copies were trimmed down to 2 copies per book in order to make room for more varieties of books on the shelves.

Yesterday, November 7, 2011 library furniture that have been laser-etched with the school logo were delivered. The Girls got pink chairs because it was voted as their favourite color and it was actually on clearance at IKEA. They have a total of 80 and 2 swivel chairs for the Librarians. The boys got 80 birch Jules for the lower level, which is half of what is needed for that level. Only a sample of the chairs that would go to the upper level was sent as there are no funds to make that happen. We have not bought any table because of funds.

We have bought all the chairs required for the Girls' Section. We have bought 80 more sets of chairs for the lower level Boys' Library. They have all been laser-etched with the school logo.We shipped them this month, July 2011. They are in transit to Nigeria for subsequent transportation to the school.

Pink chairs for the Girls' Library

We have started acquiring chairs as the funds come in. We have bought 80 pink seat shells for Girls and 30 legs; we still need more funds to buy 50 legs and their chairs will be complete. We have bought 50 birch jules chairs for the lower level boys' library and we still need funds to buy 50 legs and 50 more complete(shell+legs) chairs and the lower level will be done. They are ready to assemble products that can be shipped into Nigeria in parts. We buy them at IKEA, Atlanta. Jules and Gilbert product line.

The upper level boys library will experience heavier use so we will stock it with Birch Gilbert. This is stronger and more expensive by $10/chair. We have only acquired one.

So far, all chairs are with the laser-etcher who will inscribe words and logo as shown on the chairs. This is a theft-deterrent and will also boost the image of the library.

The trained librarians have begun manual cataloging of the books.

One of the donors happened to be visiting that part of Nigeria and she saw the building and was very excited . She called to thank me and is willing to talk to Global Foundation if need be.

In preparation towards an ability to manage a 50,000 book volume library, three of the untrained librarians were sent for training with the Ekiti State Library services. The old books have been removed along with all warped bookshelves. New bookshelves have been assembled and arranged. Books are being arranged on the shelves.

All libraries are fully painted now. We recieved more floor space at the Boys Library that needed to be tiled. The tiles have been cleared from the seaport and will be taken to the school before the end of this month.

The project will be complete once we have funds to buy furniture. Material donations received have helped us a great deal.

Pictures of Library - Exterior

At the behest of Dr. Femi Mosuro; two other friends teamed up with him to provide 100 drums of paints. This enabled us to paint the entire library buildings at the Boys' and Girls' Section. Surplus will go on to paint some other structures in the school. They also paid for the paint job.

We need money to buy good chairs and tables aolng with three circulation desks. PLEASE DONATE .

Project Tour

I went to Nigeria and personally inspected the Libraries that benefit from the donations to Project 3751. The Principals and the students were very happy. The interiors have been painted, windows changed , floors tiled. The Girls believe there is nothing to wait for any longer. They have started using theirs inspite of the incomplete status . They basically read their classroom texts there as the books that would go in to the Libraries are in the catalog(uing) stage at the Boys' Section. Books and bookshelves are currently in the Boys' Section. I showed them how to assemble the shelves. I asked them to arrange all the bookshelves on the two floors without space for tables and chairs in order to have enough rooms to air the books put up for catalog(uing). The staff and students asked me questions, thanked me, sang "Christ is our cornerstone" which is the school hymn and said the school prayer. We exchanged our salutation, "up scho" and departed feeling elated and full of expectations. I recording was made which will be on Youtube shortly. Thank you.

The Girls' Library Doors and Windows

We have successfully changed the windows and doors of the Girls' Library. We also changed the cracked and warped exterior doos of the Boy's Library at the Lower level. We need you to please help us to paint the exterior by donating generously to this project. At the beginning of this fund-raising campaign, all windows, doors and roofs were bad. We plugged every leak on the roof, cleared all blockages from the gutter. We have replaced all windows and doors of the library. We walled off a door at the back of the Girls' Library that could admit water and make the books prone to mildew. The crew that would paint the interior are currently working on it. The wall paper borders meant to adorn the ceiling rail will go up as soon as the paints dry out. We will put up the shelves following this. The books that have been sitting under lock will be aired on the shelves pending the time the State Librarian will complete weeding and cataloguing of all books . In the interim, we will ship tables and chairs. this will complete the project and the students will then be able to freely use the library.

Congratulations!!!!!! We made it everybody. We found a new way of telling our story to the entire world, of increasing our donor base, telling the entire world that good things are happening everywhere. We showed you how you can be a part of it, how a little help from you means the world elsewhere. We fulfilled our challenge hurdle on September 15, 2009 at 4.03pm by raising $4,034 from 63 people.
