<img src='http://cloud.globalgiving.org/pfil/3556/Girl_in_green_shirt_S4H_All_Star_Cebisa_Noludwe_Small.jpg' alt='Girl in green shirt_S4H All Star, Cebisa Noludwe'style='margin: 5px;'/>

Girl in green shirt_S4H All Star, Cebisa Noludwe

Written by H4H/S4H Intern, Daan Schoenmakers

At the beginning of April the YDF team presented their new Violence Prevention Manual at a 5-day pilot training in Cape Town. The manual was developed in collaboration with the Department of Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) and the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR). It will soon be launched as an additional life skills component to the existing YDF coach’s toolkit.

The manual consists of several chapters, aimed at empowering MVPs to deal with different violence related themes. It supports MVPs in creating suitable football activities to address violence and conflict in schools and communities. The main objective of the training was firstly to introduce the new module to experts in the field of youth development through sport and violence prevention, and secondly, to collect feedback to build and strengthen the manual.

During the five days the participants explored different themes related to violence prevention and sport through participative discussion and role play. The interactive experience empowered them with strong practical tools to deal with violence related challenges on the sports pitch and in their communities. The participants were also able to give valuable feedback into the further development of the manual.

Soccer 4 Hope was represented by Cebisa Noludwe. Cebisa is an All Star Community Coordinator. She lives and works in the community of Crossroads. As an All Star she leads and mentors 10 MVP volunteer coaches. Cebisa and the MVPs deal with the real violence related challenges that face South African youth on a daily basis.

The YDF Manual for Violence Prevention will shortly be launched as a tool for ‘coach development’ in the Western Cape. 80 MVPs will have the opportunity to attend this training later in the year.

The ABC Basketball and Life Skills Camp

<img src='http://cloud.globalgiving.org/pfil/3556/ZimCamp14_Small.jpg' alt='ZimCamp'style='margin: 5px;'/>

ZimCamp

Written by H4H Zim Director of Operations, Ngoni Mukukula

13- 16 December, 2010 at Prince Edward School

Over View

The ABC Basketball and Life Skills Development Camp came and went at Prince Edward School from 13-16 December, 2010.

The Camp, whose aim was to create a learning environment for top basketball athletes and coaches, was organized by Hoops 4 Hope Zimbabwe and it achieved its set objectives. Hoops 4 Hope flew in Thierry Kita from Cape Town. Kita is the South African National Team Coach. He is also the Ubuntu Coach for the Boston Celtics where he spends more than a month every year.

All said and done, coaches learned from each other as they filled up note pads but the athletes were the biggest winners. They learned from the best and had a life changing experience.

Target Group

The Camp targeted boys and girls under the age group of 20 years and these were drawn from across Zimbabwe. Of the 72 that attended, 24 of them were girls.

The Program

Basketball occupied the biggest space in the program but other important life topics such as health were also touched in the Program. The athletes learned stuff from nutrition to conditioning, from HIV/AIDS to gender and from Anti- Doping to leadership skills.

Other Beneficiaries

On the 3rd day of the Camp, a group of 48 kids were brought from all the communities doing Hoops 4 Hope Programs. The Kids, most of them underprivileged, had a rare opportunity to be taught by the campers. For the campers it was a complete role reversal. The sight of the children all clad in the orange ‘Protect Me' and 'I Trust You’ tee shirts was a memorable sight. The young ones had a lot of fun too.

The Lessons Delivered

The children enjoyed a lot of song and dance and finally sat down for the famous circle time. As with the older boys and girls, Hoops 4 Hope All Stars did four lessons namely;

1. I am at risk.

A great lesson that teaches awareness of the deadly HIV/AIDS and prevention

2. Find the Ball

This talks about the awareness and fighting stigma and encourages getting tested

3. My Supporters

This talks about the importance of supporting the sick

4. The Human Knot

This lessons teaches leadership and perseverance

Conclusion

A Camp like the ABC Basketball and Life Skills Development Camp was overdue in Zimbabwe. A Camp like this one provides much better opportunities for interfacing with the young ones and can help in influencing a positive behavior change and will undoubtedly help the youths beat the odds.

New Campaign in Touchdown 4 Hope!

<img src='http://cloud.globalgiving.org/pfil/3556/T4H_V3a_Small.jpg' alt='Touchdown4Hope Logo'style='margin: 5px;'/>

Touchdown4Hope Logo

From the basketball court, to the soccer field and now the football field, the H4H Global League is helping use the power of sport to make a real difference. The Touchdown 4 Hope launch at former 49′ers Kezar Stadium in San Francisco on November 2nd, 2010 was a huge success!

Oakland Raiders players Desmond Bryant (DT), Matt Shaunghnessy (DE), and Lamarr Houston (DE) gave their time to share their knowledge with kids from SF and Oakland Community Centers!

Ubuntu, Focus, and Responsibility were the tools of the day. Kids began their focus and enjoyed a reading of “A Moment of Quiet is Nothing to Fear” from local San Francisco author, Christine Gardner. Then H4H South African Director Kita (also Celtics Ubuntu coach) shared his inspirational words with the kids. Fitness and cooperation were emphasized as kids ran through actual Oakland Raiders drills, coached by the NFL Players. After the activities, kids gathered for a circle time, where the athletes shared their wisdom with the kids. Former Harvard grad Desmond talked to kids about being responsible, staying in school, and keeping your dreams alive, while Matt addressed the problems of bullying and how to have empathy/ubuntu for others. After a moving question and answer session, the last question kids wanted to know was “Are you really in Madden 11?”. . .all three players players grinned with a resounding “YUP!”

At the end, the kids were treated to Patxi’s Pizza and great gifts were donated by EA Sports, ESPN, Nolet, Rightbrain Promo, the Golden State Warriors, the San Francisco Giants, the Oakland A’s, & Stanford Football.
