This report is written by Melissa and Josh, two GlobalGiving representatives who are traveling throughout Brazil during the months of June, July and August to visit GlobalGiving partners throughout the country:

We were impressed with Projeto LAR as soon as we arrived. The property is beautiful, full of tropical plants and is tucked away from the noise and bustle of the city. As soon as we arrived, the adorable children grabbed our hands to show us around their homes. The houses are more than shelter for the children. They are homes in which the children can grow up and thrive. While we were walking around with the education specialist, it was clear that she had a good relationship with the children and that they respected her. The project supports around thirty kids, which makes the project manageable. Maintaining a relatively small number of children enables Projeto LAR to focus on the quality of the support is gives instead of accommodating government demands to accept more children. With more children, it would be impossible to give the same type of support the organization gives now.

We were also impressed with the professionalism of the staff. We met with Paola Mantegazza Pomelli, the founder and president of Projeto LAR. She spoke openly about her belief in investing in a staff that is trained, experienced and competent. Most of the employees have been working at the project for six months to a year. Paola was open in explaining difficulties with previous staff members and in her decision to create a transition in the organization in order to best serve the children.

Recently, one of the children turned eighteen and has since left Projeto LAR. With support from Projeto LAR, he received a job at sixteen. The young man saved his earnings, and now with a little bit of extra help he will be able to buy his own house! Projeto LAR represents a support system to the children well after they turn 18.

Projeto Lar provides a healthy atmosphere and an opportunity of development and growth for children who suffered sexual abuse and domestic violence.

We value the family structure, so kids can have their affection needs fulfilled. We welcome, support and protect kids and teens in their vital need; encourage them to build life projects; respect their individuality and provide appropriate conditions for developing the skills inherent in each of them.

Our professionals are very committed to reinforce the self esteem by extra activities and therapy.

We are constantly seeking for improvements, from the house basics needs, to maintenance, improvements, adjustments, repairs and many others.. Detecting the problems, we have to provide solutions.

Today, 30 children are assisted in our shelter, but there are thousands of them waiting for a chance, waiting for a life of dignity, for a home. And that is why, your help is so important.

Projeto Lar is committed to change this children’s life, and prepare them for a great future!

During the last three months, the donations are extremely important to give our work continuity and perspective, promoting an emotional and mental rehabilitation for children who suffered sexual abuse and domestic violence...

The donations are used for improve our assistance, maintenance and treatments. Projeto L.A.R. provides for the children a real life, and because of this, we use all our forces to support them in all areas, for example: basic needs, education and hobbies. Our professionals are very committed to reinforce the self esteem by extra activities and therapy.

Today, 36 children are assisted in our shelter, but there are thousand of them waiting for a chance, waiting for a life of dignity, for a home. And because of this, your help is so important.

In 2010 our goal is to expand our range of services and the amount of assisted children, because there are still a lot of them suffering violence… Projeto LAR is committed to save their lives.
