Vikram is 12 years old boy residing in 12, Kamaraj Nagar, Ariyamangalam, Tiruchirappalli District, Tamil Nadu. He was enjoying all the love, care and affection of his father as the only child. His father died in an accident in 2001. After his father’s death his mother got remarried and she gave birth to a girl child. Now his mother and his step father are concentrating only on the girl child and they least care for Vikram. This made Vikram a rag picker and he started to take care of himself as he did not get enough food. The mother could not educate Vikram as the step father is not supportive. Our New Life team identified him and gave a continuous counseling to him and his mother. Now he is studying 5th standard in our child labour special school. After a few counseling sessions his mother is also taking care of him.

Our special school teacher Mrs. Selvi says that in the beginning Vikram was arrogant and never obeyed the teacher, and quarreled with other children often. After some time, there is a drastic change in his attitude. Education along with nutritious food has made a remarkable change in the life of Vikram. This is made possible only with the help of donations made by noble hearts like you and so many Vikrams are given an opportunity to improve their self esteem, sense of pride, confidence and motivation to continue their education.

Be an angel to this cursed child

<img src='http://cloud.globalgiving.org/pfil/3285/Ramjan_Small.JPG' alt='Ramjan'style='margin: 5px;'/>

Ramjan

Ramjan, 13 years old, born to a prostitute mother and a father who fetches business for his wife, is cursed to take care of herself. Born with a brother (working in a fish shop) she has to earn for her living by packing grocery items in a nearby factory. She was earning Rs.30/- per day. She is not happy, deprived of the care and affection she should get as a child.

It was then she was seen by the special school teacher of New Life. The teacher told about her to the counselor and the counselor met her parents. It took much time to counsel them and even the child to make her come to the special school. The child lacked motivation, interest and had fear to come to school. She was repeatedly counseled and after 5 months efforts she joined the school.

In the beginning she was irregular to the school. But now she never misses a class. The New Life team is happy that her right to education has been protected. And we are taking efforts to see that she completes her education and thus get a legal employment.

Children like Ramjan can have a safe future only with the support of people like you. Join with us in saving such children by supporting financially and by spreading the message to your friends and relatives.

New Life is happy to announce that 887 (cumulative figure from August 1999) child labour children who were taught in the special schools have been admitted to regular schools. This year 65 children are admitted to the regular schools in their nearby locality. These children are trained in academics and motivated to face the other children who are well equipped. Counseling was given to these children to face the world with courage.

Mr. Manikandan is now doing his post graduation in Physics and he is proud that he is the first graduate from his village Alamarathupatti. He was working in mat weaving industry and the New Life special school teacher identified him and motivated him to attend the special school. It was very difficult to convince the parents as they had to loose a share of family income. But once he was allowed, Manikandan proved his ability and scored 93% in the School final exams and is now doing his Post graduation. The pride is not only for Mr. Manikandan, but also for the organization as it is a milestone to the impact it makes in the community we work. Below is the picture of Manikandan with his loving special school teacher.

We thank all our supporters who made it possible. Help us nurture many more Manikandans who are disallowed to enjoy their rights.

Donors are always welcome to visit our projects and meet the children and interact with them directly. Are you interested?

The education and skills give them the bargaining

<img src='http://cloud.globalgiving.org/pfil/3285/DSC02352_Small.JPG' alt='Mrs. Visalatchi'style='margin: 5px;'/>

Mrs. Visalatchi

Mrs. Visalatchi, is the vocational teacher of our special school for child labourers in Alamarathupatti, a small village in Trichy district. Most of the children who attend the special school were earlier employed in goat rearing or mat weaving. Mrs. Visalatchi teaches them the alternate livelihood skills in stitching, embroidery, basket making, and making paintings with waste iron wires. She says the skills taught give the children confidence and the skills in stitching help them in stitching their torn clothes, fix buttons, etc. Two of her students Ayyanar (16) and Podumani (17) got skilled in embroidery while they were in our special schools. Now they are employed in a textile industry in Tiruppur and earning Rs.100/- per day. This is more than twice the wages paid locally in Musiri panchayath in which their village is located.

When a child is unskilled he is exploited. Once he gets skilled and educated, he gains bargaining power and knows to protect him from exploitation. This is made possible only by educating the children, says Mrs. Visalatchi. And educating them in turn is possible only by people like you who support us in running the schools. So kindly continue supporting us and we request you to spread words to your friends and relatives.

Links:

New Life in Face Book

Visit us in our website

Kalidoss speaks

10 year old Kalidoss is residing in 16, Nehruji Nagar, Ariyamangalam Zone, Trichirappalli District, Tamil Nadu. His father suffered from TB and he died. His Mother is working as a construction worker. He has two elder brothers. They studied up to 5th standard then stopped studying and started working. His eldest brother is working as a lorry cleaner and second brother is working in a wood carving shop.

Kalidoss says “I don’t like my brothers activities, attitudes and their characters. They don not bother about our family and are little worried about my education. They don’t support my mother and fights with her whenever she asks money for my education asking her to stop my studies. So when I completed my fourth I had to discontinue my studies. That’s how I stopped going to school and started Collecting waste Plastics.”

When NEW LIFE Field workers saw him collecting him the wastes they had a chat with him to find out his family situation. Then they met with the mother and told her to send her son to school instead of waste plastic collection. It was very difficult to convince the mother due to their poor financial conditions. But due to the persistent efforts of the NEW LIFE team she was convinced and Kalidoss was admitted in 5th standard in Child Labour Special School, Ariyamangalam.

After he started going to the special school, there has been a drastic change in the way he looks and his attitude towards life has changed positively. Education along with nutritious food has made a remarkable change in the life of Kalidoss. This is made possible only with the help of donations made by noble hearts like you and so many Kalidosses are given an opportunity to improve their self esteem, sense of pride, confidence and motivation to continue their education.

Links:

This is our website

Attachments:

Kalidoss (DOC)

She dropped out from school education at standard eighth due to her parents inability to support her education. They were very poor and to earn additional income Anitha was sent to rear goats of affluent people in the village. She wanted to study and was talking about her fate to her friends. This was brought to the notice of our special school teacher and the counselor and the teacher met her parents.

We had to make several attempts to convince her parents to send her to our special school. She joined our special school, studied well and was admitted to regular school in standard ninth. She passed her higher secondary examinations in this May 2010 and now she is admitted to Diploma in Pharmacy.

We can make this happen only with the support of donors like you and we pray that your good hearts be blessed.

Dear Donors,

WISHING YOU ALL A HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!

You can view the story of an orphaned child who was made a child labour to repay the debt of his deceased father. The father had AIDS and he had borrowed Rs.5000/- from the owner of mat weaving industry. When the father and the mother (she died after 6 months of the demise of the father) died, the child was forced to work to repay the debt of his father. We are happy to share that the child has been rescued and sent to the special school by the New Life team.

We remember you, the donors, with gratitude who made such things happen. Share the joy by watching the movie.

Dear Donors,

Shamima Banu was working in a grocery shop. She says " the teacher made me come to school and convinced my mother saying that New Life will help me study. My mother said yes and now am studying here. "

A big bunch of gratitude from our team and the children benefited by the donations from you.

The funds you have donated have helped our organization to support 100 children who were engaged in fortune telling, mat weaving and weaving. The funds were utilized to support the children in 4 villages of Trichy district in Tamil Nadu . 4 child labour special schools were set up in these places. The donation is used to pay the salary of a teacher, a caretaker, a vocational training teacher and a yoga teacher, the rent and maintenance, the education materials and training materials for the children besides providing them a good meal once a day and a stipend to the children to motivate their parents to encourage their studies. We have admitted 100 children and the school is functioning from October 2009.

We thank all the noble hearted once again and pray the almighty that he blesses you all with all the health and wealth.
