More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Dals (Lentils) are extensively grown by farmers in tribal areas of Udaipur. Socially marginalized and poor farmers sell their produce directly in raw form, which passes through a series of intermediaries, including several layers of traders, processing mills and wholesalers/retailers. Farmers, in this commodity-chain, are systematically exploited due to asymmetries in information and other inefficiencies. The farmers ultimately receive less than 1/3 of prevailing retail price of processed dals

Activities

Getting the farmer-group registerd into an organization, train them for processing, acquire land, build infrastructure, install machinery & market their finished dal. With this poor farmers will receive more equitable returns for their hard work.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Setting up a dal-mill allows farmers to engage in value addition & more profits. Later more than 1000 families will participate in the venture to see a 15-50% increase in their incomes. It’ll also impact on their better health & nutrition levels.

Project Message

Progress in rural India will be limited until new industry comes forth for the benefit of farming communities.

Latest Update from the Field

Waitng for more funds

By Mr. Shailendra Tiwari - In Charge Natural Resource Development Program, September 29, 2008 09:21 PM

Dear Friend,

Greetings form Seva Mandir!

We would like to communicate our heartfelt thanks to all our donors for their continuing support and faith in our work. We would like to share a brief update of the program that you are supporting.

In the Program – ‘Profits for Poor’ - the harvest season for the pulse (urad - blackgram and tuar - pigeon pea) is nearing and the community is making preparations for the harvest. As of now the community is discussing the procurement mechanism (place, responsible person, storage mechanism) and arranging for a loan. There is much enthusiasm about the whole process.

Along with it there has also been discussions regarding the contribution that each village community could do in the construction of the building where they will be installing the machinery for processing. Many villagers are excited to undertake their first big business venture. However, the constraints for funds are there because a working capital is required in order to run the processing plant at its full capacity. The community will also be seeking a loan from the Village Development Fund of the village and some amount from their membership fee will also be helpful in adding to the total working capital. However a big portion of the total working capital is still to be sought.

Your support therefore, is very critical in this program. We hope that it sees a wonderful success and that every farmer gets maximum benefits from the program. Everyone has been learning a lot in this program and the energy shown by the villagers is remarkable.

I would like to thank once again to all of you for helping the farmers is their first business venture. Kindly keep up your support.

If you have any questions then please do contact me at shailendra.tiwari@sevamandir.org

With regards,

Sincerely,

Shaildendra Tiwari
