Putting Sisterhood on the Agenda

<img src='http://cloud.globalgiving.org/pfil/1883/011_Small.jpg' alt='Ayana on her way to school'style='margin: 5px;'/>

Ayana on her way to school

Dear Friend,

Ayana and other girls in St. John need your help.

Last year, Sisterhood Agenda registered Ayana and her friends for womanhood training at the New Year’s Eve Youth Extravaganza in Cruz Bay, St. John. Thanks to your help, she also attended the first Female Empowerment Conference for Girls in the Virgin Islands and received educational materials for the year. As a participant of A Journey Toward Womanhood, Positive Media, and Girl Band, Ayana is learning how to create her own future and be a poised, confident leader. Your contribution helped Ayana get access to a lifetime of learning about supporting and loving herself, developing healthy habits, and being successful. Thank you!

However, there are other girls who urgently need this type of support. On the small island of St. John, there is no public high school, women’s center, YWCA or Girl Scout chapter. Many girls, unable to see other alternatives, become pregnant at an early age, drop out of school, and rely on government support to feed themselves and their new families. Some girls need one-on-one mentoring and ways to express themselves positively.

On October 19th, GlobalGiving.org is matching at 30% all online donations up to $1,000 per donor per project! There is $100,000 available in matching funds on October 19th. Once these matching funds are used, no more matching funds will be applied.

Please donate to our project and support the girls waiting to be successful! Your help is urgently needed and much appreciated!

Getting Ready for Sisterhood 2012

NEW OFFICE LOCATION
Sisterhood Agenda recently relocated its administrative office on the island of St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Now, the offices are much closer to town with easier access to services and St. Thomas.

SISTERHOOD GLOBAL CONFERENCE
Sisterhood Agenda’s inaugural global sisterhood conference is scheduled for November 2012 in St. Thomas. Monthly planning committee meetings are taking place via webinar to ensure representation and inclusion for a successful event. Currently, committee members can participate via telephone and/or using computers. Geographic representation for planning committee meetings included participants from the U.S., Uganda, Senegal, and India.

Sisterhood Agenda is hopeful about using technology for all of its global constituents to access both planning meetings and the annual conference event via videoconference.

The inaugural global sisterhood conference event is sure to be an exciting one with multi-general, global participation and local support.

SISTERHOOD PROGRAMS
Sisterhood Agenda held a Sisterhood/Brotherhood Career & Life Skills Training Summer Program in St. Thomas this past summer. The 4-week program, sponsored by the VI Department of Labor, engaged 13 youth who successfully completed the program. Activities included mentoring, debate, job fair participation, completing employment applications, interview skills, field trips, and guest speakers. Due to its success, Sisterhood Agenda plans to implement the program throughout the school year in local VI schools, collaborating with local nonprofits.

Sisterhood Agenda’s Sisterhood Empowerment Project includes A Journey Toward Womanhood and the Positive Media project.

A Journey Toward Womanhood
Sisterhood Agenda is coordinating local A Journey Toward Womanhood

Programming with support from the VI Department of Human Services. In addition, Sisterhood Agenda’s A Journey Toward Womanhood program was recommended for funding for implementation in the Virgin Islands starting 2012. Sisterhood Agenda continues to share its curriculum information with agencies around the globe for international program replication with local adaptation.

Positive Media
There are exciting developments with the creation of positive, new, alternative media that uplifts women and girls of African descent. Sisterhood Agenda is coordinating its Positive Media project with the organization’s webmaster, universities, nonprofit agencies of interest, and a media Global Partner located in the Washington, DC area, See Your Worth Productions. A completely new website is currently being constructed with an emphasis on Positive Media. Sisterhood Agenda is filming public service announcements, coordinating the Sisterhood Agenda Show, and creating other new media content. While the new website is completed, Sisterhood Agenda updates its YouTube site with new Positive Media content: www.youtube.com/sisterhoodagenda.

St John, VI—While Sisterhood Agenda’s Global Training Academy is new in the Virgin Islands, Sisterhood Agenda is an award-winning global nonprofit organization that was founded almost twenty years ago by Princeton graduate and Ashoka Fellow Angela D. Coleman, a resident of St. John. Serving over 5 million constituents each year with over 3,000 Global Partner agencies in 32 countries, Sisterhood Agenda’s new Global Training Academy in the U.S. Virgin Islands includes youth activities, programs, training sessions, workshops, and retreats, plus an expansion of its innovative online media and educational system.

“Sisterhood Agenda is here to empower women and girls in the Virgin Islands and around the world. Women, girls and service providers will come here for youth programs, training, workshops, retreats, and other educational activities that uplift and aid in the self-development of women and girls,” states Coleman, President. The agency creates and implements activities for women and girls with special emphasis on females of African descent who are historically at risk, traditionally underserved and marginalized. Sisterhood Agenda’s four empowerment principles are: sisterhood, self-knowledge, self-development, and self-esteem.

Many believe that this type of youth development is critical: “We have to pay attention because they are our next generation of leaders, teachers, and entrepreneurs. They need our guidance, protection, love and support so that they make good decisions for themselves and their communities. This is truly a community effort where everyone is invited to participate.”

Coleman’s vision is to establish the Academy as a boarding school for girls, but also as a training ground for parents, service providers and others interested in uplifting and supporting women and girls in their development.

In addition to the Sisterhood Agenda Global Training Academy, Sisterhood Agenda projects include:

Sisterhood Empowerment Project

A Journey Toward Womanhood

Update: February 2010

Greetings! Please find more information about Sisterhood Agenda, its Sisterhood Empowerment Project, and Global Training Academy below.

BACKGROUND
Sisterhood Agenda is a global, award-winning nonprofit organization that was started in 1994 by Princeton graduate Angela D. Coleman. Sisterhood Agenda creates and implements activities for women and girls with special emphasis on females of African descent. Sisterhood Agenda addresses the social, health, economic and cultural issues of this historically at-risk and traditionally underserved target population.

Based in the United States, Sisterhood Agenda serves over 5 million constituents each year and has thousands of global partners in over 32 countries. Sisterhood resources are listed in the organization’s online Global Resource Directory.

Sisterhood Agenda recognizes that the most effective programs often operate at the grassroots level. Sisterhood Agenda's social impact is expanded through partnerships with agencies, individuals and businesses throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, the Caribbean, United Kingdom, and Africa. Global Partners create an extensive sisterhood network to increase local organization capacity and empower girls and women to become agents for positive change around the globe.

The Sisterhood Empowerment Project is a large part of making this vision a reality.

ACTIVITIES
Many service providers have requested in-house training, education, and support. As a result, Sisterhood Agenda is in the U.S. Virgin Islands setting up its Global Training Academy. The Sisterhood Agenda Global Training Academy is a USVI-based learning center for training, resource-sharing, and knowledge. The Global Training Academy also includes an interactive Internet-based learning system component.

The first Global Training Academy gathering is a Sisterhood Unity Conference for Healing. The conference engages program participants, parents, project staff, partner agencies, and the general public. The Unity Conference provides Train the Trainer opportunities to increase the capacity of individuals and agencies working with youth and scale the strategy, thus increasing and expanding its impact. The Project provides unique opportunities for youth and educators to educate, entertain, empower, and support each other in the spirit of sisterhood and brotherhood. With its cultural enrichment, programming, media, public education, and learning modules, the Global Training Academy Sisterhood Unity Conference is a model for capacity-building and sustainability.

With support from Google and YouTube, Sisterhood Agenda Magazine has been converted to an online publication that is completely digital. The new online magazine format is:

*Visually attractive, interactive and fun
*FREE for everyone
*A green alternative to reduce paper and chemical consumption to save our environment
*Distributed to Sisterhood Agenda's Global Network and Global Partners (over 5 million)

Sisterhood Agenda declared 2010 the Year of the Goddess. In addition to the magazine, Sisterhood Agenda will launch new multi-media services in 2010 that are participatory and promote the positive growth of global girls in sisterhood. These media services include new programs, webinars, videos, starter kits, and enhanced connections with Sisterhood Agenda Global Partners.

Everyone’s support has been tremendous! Thank you for putting Sisterhood on your Agenda and we look forward to bringing you more positive role models, inspirational stories and resources in the near future!
