More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Bpeace aims to address the poverty and ongoing violence in Afghanistan. Results of research conducted in Habiba’s neighborhood on the outskirts of Kabul showed an unmet demand for a safe and educational environment for preschool aged children. In addition to a safe learning environment for 150 children, the school also provides jobs in the community, and promotes economic prosperity to the immediate and extended families of the children who attend by allowing parents to work.

Activities

When Habiba opens her school, she will create jobs, provide a safe place for preschool children to learn, play and flourish, and give parents the opportunity to work, strengthen the local economy, and ultimately promote prosperity, leading to peace.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

The school will serve 150 preschool children per year, giving them the chance to learn and flourish and giving parents the opportunity to work and prosper. Increased access to education and economic prosperity will lead to a more peaceful community.

Project Message

"Habiba creates a haven in a country that still sees children playing in gutters, because there is no where else, and at the same time she promotes early learning to fight the 80% illiteracy rate.”
- Toni Maloney, Bpeace Volunteer Board Member

Latest Update from the Field

Final Update on Habiba's Preschool

By Marla Gitterman - Program Director, July 23, 2008 10:25 PM

The pre-school is up and running! Director Habiba is making enough income to cover all of her expenses at the school. Parents have recently begun asking for transportation and Habiba is in the process of purchasing a car to address that demand. The newest addition to the program is that extracurricular studies have begun with students coming to study Koran.

Marketing is an ongoing task, but with the help of her community, Business Council for Peace and Globalgiving.com donors, Habiba is thrilled with the exciting progress she has seen since opening in March. Thank you!
