Four Women's Technology Centers (I'x CETEBIs) are now fully operational in strategically located rural communities. Each is open seven days a week and is staffed by two volunteer operators from the community that have received a training program. These volunteers receive a small payment for their time, but the largest return is the chance to learn new skills while helping the development of their community.

As of this writing, the impact of these centers includes: --9 community micro-lending groups are using the technology centers to keep track of their finances --80 people are receiving computer training in each center --The centers are also being used for literacy training, with 70 women enrolled. --In addition to technology training, the women are receiving training in Methods for Social Change.

Ixil Mayan Women at Center Inauguration

On March 13, 2008, the first I’x CETEBI (Women’s Technology Center) was inaugurated in the village of Salquil Grande, Nebaj, Guatemala. The center will be administered by the Association for Rural Development of the Ixil Women of Salquil.

The Project was funded principally by HIVOS Foundation with additional support from Global Giving. This is the first of four technology centers to be installed during 2008 by Ajb’atz’ Enlace Quiche and its project partner, I’x K’iche K’amalb’e Women’s Coordinator Group.

The center will have an Internet connection, as well as 6 computers, 2 printers, a digital camera, a digital video camera, and a scanner. An important addition to the center design, based on the needs of the local women, is a small games area that children can use while their mothers receive courses or make other use of the center’s services.

This is the first access to Internet available to this community of 4,200 people, and will also serve another 4,000 people in the outlying countryside. Thanks to the support of HIVOS Foundation and Global Giving, the members of the women’s group will receive scholarships for training courses as well as technical assistance in administering the center. To make the center self-sustainable and to support the whole community’s development, the center will also offer courses and Internet use to the general public, especially students.
