Challenge

The 2,700 islanders of Wasini fall into the WHO category of “no access” to water and therefore should have an intervention priority and action rating of “Very High”. Diarrhoea from dirty water accounts for 11% of deaths in poor countries, which can be reduced through sanitation. We will help the villagers collect rainwater, store it and use it in a clean and sanitary manner. Renovation of existing but poorly inadequate facilities, combined with small scale collection provide the best solutions.

Solution

Renovation of existing storage with thick flexible liners will enable their use again. Villagers will also be helped with the preparation of new tanks from pits excavated for bricks. Excess water will be sold to local hotels to cover maintenance.

Long-Term Impact

Water will be provided for 2,700 islanders who presently have to buy water from the mainland. In the long term this will be self sustaining, with materials being cheap to maintain, excess water being sold and money being saved due to free access.
