More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Children from indigenous rural villages are being denied main stream schooling as their families cannot afford the materials or inscription fees. This leaves them without the opportunities that every child deserves. The children will be taught the National Curriculum. This solution provides a huge impact as it provides for many more than scholarships alone can.

Activities

By providing free schooling and vocational skills we can ensure these indigenous communities get the same opportunities as everyone else. With very small contributions from families and graduates, the school will then become sustainable.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Over the years this school will teach thousands. Because it will be run and funded by local communities in the future, it will also foster strong communities and ensure the indigenous populations are not swallowed up by development and ruralisation.

Project Message

My people simply cannot afford the high prices of secondary education and therefore are thwarted in their desire to help their own families progress.
- Elena Siquinajay de Suy, Local Indigenous Leader

Latest Update from the Field

Secondary school and beyond

By Dom Williams - Director of Latin American Projects, August 06, 2008 06:06 PM

2008 has seen a record number of children entering secondary school in our projects in Guatemala, with the number close to 50. What's more, almost 10 children are now in Teaching College, so bringing the education full circle. In 2009 it is hoped that over 50 children will be attending secondary school from our projects, with this figure set to rise to almost 500 in the next 5 years.
