Dear Donors,
First on behalf of Health and Water Foundation and all the girls from Nyamira County, i would like to wish you a happy and prosperous year. You have been an inspiration, motivation and a helping hand for more than 2000 girls in Kisii County through your generous contributions to make sure that adolescent girls don't lack sanitary towels, clean toilets, hygiene and water in their schools.
Throughout the year (2014) every month with your help we've managed to provide sanitary towels to approx. 460 adolescent girls from Kiangoso primary school, Kebobora Primary school, Nyangorora primary school. The girls were able to receive 4 packets of sanitary towels enough to last them each for four months. By the month of August, we noted an increase in number of girls attending school by 40% simply through the provision of sanitary towels alone to these girls. The entire schools are very happy with this increase and have urged us through you to continue the support.
On every November of each year primary schools in Kenya participate in the national examinations to determine those who proceed to Secondary schools. In the three schools ever since its introduction there has never been a high number of girls more than boys taking part in the national examination. All the three schools had more girls than boys taking part in the examination, not only were they taking part but they were also taking lead as well in the examinations. The head teacher of Kebobora Mr. Chiseli had this to say,
“In my school i usually register around 25 girls and around 40 boys to take part in the national examination. This is because by the time the examination nears most girls have already dropped school and in some cases married off, but this year i am happy to announce that i have registered 46 girls and 41 boys to take part in the examination. This is far more girls that i have ever registered in school and i am confident the best performer this time round will be a girl. All this i can majorly credit to the provision of sanitary towels these girls are receiving every month from Global Giving. I thank all the individual donors for making these important donations."
Concurrently with provision of sanitary towels to the girls, we've also been providing sexual maturity education trainings to these girls who statistically were getting pregnant early and being forced to drop school or get married as underage. In our other projects where we are dealing directly with the community, we've been able to stress the need to parents of not allowing marrying off of their underage daughters and allowing the daughters to continue with school after getting pregnant as opposed to dropping them off from school when they get pregnant. Our trainings has also yielding results in the three schools and we are able to report that underage pregnancy has dropped by 23% for last year alone. Our hope is that we are able to drop the underage pregnancy in these schools by 80% in the next two years.
Am hereby happy report to you that on the month of September we distributed sanitary towels (4 packets per girl) to last the girls for months up to December as follows: in Kebobora pr school we distributed sanitary towels/pads to 136 girls, in Kiangoso pr school we distributed to 189 girls and in Nyangorora pr school we distributed to 136 girls. This year (2015) we are planning on extending the services by giving them undergarments as most of the girls have worn-out undergarments which make it difficult to use the sanitary towels well. We are planning to provide them with shoes on top of the sanitary towels and undergarments. We would like to hear your comments on what you think about the project and also how we best we can improve it for the girls. I've attached photos for you to view.Thank you.
