More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Subsistence farming is common in Nepal, but land is steep and prone to landslides and erosion. Men often migrate to the city in search of work, leaving the burden of agriculture work and family on women. Farmers grow the same crops each year, reducing soil nutrients and there is limited vegetable and fruit cultivation. Agriculture is overly dependent on chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Women use forests to collect firewood and fodder, and do not cultivate trees to replace what they use.

Activities

Create women’s groups. Offer training on seed saving, compost making, organic farming along with market & money management. Trained farmers will then practice sustainable agriculture on their own farm and act as facilitators for other farmers.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

All community members implement sustainable agriculture program. Increase awareness on sustainable agriculture and improvement in food security. Farmers group formalize into cooperatives.

Project Message

I learned a lot from composting training. Items that we would consider as waste and throw away have a lot of value. Say, urine of animals, fodder waste, cow dung etc. Waste can be converted to gold!

Latest Update from the Field

September 2008 Update

By Katherine Zavala - Coordinator of Programs, September 04, 2008 06:41 PM

Women from the ASHA-supported Kurilo Group inspired the formation of a new group!

Members of the Kurilo group traveled to the Padeni community in the Nuwakot district of Nepal to share their learning from ASHA trainings on group management, and, as a result, the women in Padeni decided to form their own group. With ASHA’s assistance, the Padeni Tamang Women’s Group is now up and running with 21 members, bringing the total number of ASHA-supported women to 91 in four groups.
