Essential Oils, an Expanding Method of Treatment

In November, I traveled to Dholanji, India to visit Menri Monastery and the monk, who is the essential oil healer for the monastery and the Tibetan community around the monastery. I delivered the oils provided by all of your donations-- thymus thujanol, cinnamomum cassia (bark), ledum groenlandicum, cinnamomum verum (leaf), and two oil mixtures from Young Living Essential Oils that are widely used.

Yungdrung Tenzin, the self-taught essential oils healer, has now trained another monk, during 20 sessions, to begin using essential oils. Both Yungdrung Tenzin and the other monk are now treating patients using the oils sent from donors to Global Giving as well as other donors from around the world. Yungdrung Tenzin reports that the young monk apprentice is very creative, practices on himself when he is unsure of a treatment, and then checks in with Yungdrong Tenzin.

Yungdrung Tenzin, himself, has now expanded the treatments that he offers the monks to include homeopathy, massage and allopathic medicine (first aid for cuts, bruises, headaches, and other minor ailments).

Yungdrung Tenzin and his apprentice are very grateful for the essential oils that were brought through your donations.

Essential Oils to be purchased & transported soon.

We recently heard from the essential oils specialist who is in great need of the following essential oils: thymus thujanol, cinnamomum cassia (bark), ledum groenlandicum, cinnamomum verum (leaf), and two oil mixtures from Young Living Essential Oils that are widely used. You may remember from the June 2011 report that Thyme Thujanol is one of the top five essential oils used by the healer.

Using the funds raised through GlobalGiving, these oils will be purchased and then taken to the Yundrung Bon Monastic Centre in Dolanji, India in November of 2011.

We asked the essential oils healer, who speaks fluent English and French, if he could recommend a book that he has found most useful in describing the use and benefits of essential oils. He suggested the following:

"L'aromathérapie - Se soigner par les huiles essentielles"
by Dominique Baudoux (in French) [Translation: Aromatherapy - Healing Yourself With Essential Oils]

The essential oils healer at the Yundrung Bon Monastic Centre in Dolanji, India reports that villagers, students and monks continue to come to him for healing, particularly of those ailments which allopathic medicine doesn’t seem to be able to help. Although the healer has a large variety and good stock of many essential oils, usage of the following oils has been high and he has requested the following oils which will be delivered the next time someone travels to India: thymus thujanol, cinnamomum cassia (bark), ledum groenlandicum and cinnamomum zeylanicum or cinnamomum verum (leaf). He also requested two blends. There is good news at the Centre as funding as been received to build a Tibtean Bon teaching hospital in Dolanji. The hospital will have allopathic doctors and traditional Tibetan Bon doctors, who will treat patients as well as teach other practitioners. It is planned for the essential oils healer to have his practice in the hospital as well.

Grateful and Committed

Grateful and Committed

At this time of year, we are reminded of our many blessings and how the people in our lives enrich us and bring joy to every day. All of us at Creating Hope International (CHI) are especially grateful to you, for your generous support of our efforts to help Tibetan refugees in India, especially children, live healthy, happy lives. Thank you!

As you celebrate this Holiday Season and anticipate the approach of the New Year, we hope that you will think of us again and make another donation to help ensure CHI is able to continue our work. Tibetan refugees live in precarious circumstances. Though they work hard to be self-sufficient, often they must rely on the assistance of others to fulfill basic needs. With your contribution, CHI remains committed to help provide needed education and health care services.

When you make your donation, check out the Tribute Card and Gift Card options – and please tell a friend about CHI’s Tibet projects and encourage them to make a donation too.

No matter what our circumstances today, when we work together and support one another, we can be assured that tomorrow will be better. Seasons Greetings and thank you again.

Essential oils to Improve Tibetans' Health

<img src='http://cloud.globalgiving.org/pfil/1532/P1070913r_Small.jpg' alt='Lemon Trees planted for Vitamins'style='margin: 5px;'/>

Lemon Trees planted for Vitamins

Following is a report from the monk in charge of the essential oils and alternative health projects for the Tibetan Bon refugees in Dolanji, India:

I still mainly use essential oils, natural medicine, Bach flower remedies and I now start to prescribe simple homeopathic remedies, besides some allopathic medicine.

I also give simple health tips about diet and hygiene.

The patients who come to me are monks who usually have found no relief after regular allopathic treatment at Menri Dispensary and/or with Solan doctors, sometimes after several months of taking medicine.

Currently I have two regular patients:

One is a young monk (age 27) who complains of chronic headache. I prepared 8 days ago an essential oil mix (using as a base the Young Living Aroma Siez blend) to apply on his temples and around his ears. This seems to help during headaches, that are less frequent. He does not take any allopathic tablets any more.
The other one, also a young monk (age 27 ?) who has complained of itching skin on his back for many years. Regular treatments did not improve his condition. I prepared several massage oil blends that we tested on his back for a few weeks, morning and evening. One blend seemed to work best and eventually the healing was so good that I could not tell, looking at his back, where the inflamed skin was located before. As I had to leave for 2 months, I handed to him two massage oil blends for him to apply. But he discontinued the treatment and when I came back to Menri I had to resume the treatment on his inflamed back skin. Hopefully it will heal perfectly in the next few weeks.

I also wanted to let you now about the lemon trees which we were able to plant with funds from the Global Giving Project. The trees have grown well, but so far the fruits are regularly picked up by people walking by. When a proper fence will be completed, lemons will be harvested for the monastery use.
Fence pillars/sticks are installed but there is no fence wire yet. Still, those eating them are benefiting from the Vitamin C.

Many community members in Dolanji and monks in the monastery continue to use essential oils for ailments not helped by allopathic medicine. The essential oil healer has a full complement of essential oils at the moment and in the past year, based on in depth studies, has begun mixing oils for internal as well as external use. The numbers of patients vary each month but these are several patients who come regularly because of benefits that they have seen from the essential oils.

A Special Giving Opportunity.....

Thank you for your support. Your desire to make a difference in this world has made a difference, and we are very thankful that Afghan people have had their lives changed with your help.

We wanted to share with you a very special opportunity to give more than 100% from November 10 through December 1st. Please share this with those you know who care. During this time, we are privileged to receive additional matching funds from your donation through Global Giving of at least 30%. The need is still great. Afghanistan struggles to become a country of strength and stability.

The Bon are a minority Tibetan ethnic group that fled to India when the Chinese invaded Tibet in 1959. In 1968, the Bon established a community in Dolanji, India on donated land. The community has an orphanage, children’s hostel, school (to the 10th class), health center, and community farm. Essential oils, which are valuable for their healing properties, have been used for over 6 years at the health center to treat various ailments. Some of the essential oils are now able to be procured in India. However, most high quality essential oils still come from the west. Earlier this year, a volunteer, using funds raised through this project, delivered the following essential oils requested by the project to the project: thyme, cinnamon leaf, cedar leaf, petitgrain, niaouli, onion, yarrow, aniseed, cumin, ajowan, eucalyptus, manuka, benzoin and grapeseed.

Snapshot (2008) of the Tibetan Health Project

The essential oils health practitioner in Dolanji continues to use essential oils on Tibetan refugee patients that request it. The oils are particularly effective on wounds, sprains and muscle ailments. Because he now has so many oils, carpenters in the refugee community recently made a special cabinet to hold the essential oils. Having acquired some additional land, the monastery in the Tibetan community is planning on planting some plants in 2009 that can be used to make essential oils. The monastery also plans to plant plants to be used in Tibetan healing generally.

The essential oils health practitioner in Dolanji continues to use essential oils with over 40 Tibetan refugee patients each month. He has expanded into other alternative areas and will report on those the next time that there is a visit. Deliveries of essential oils and bottles that were in short supply were made in December 2006 and April 2007. Oils included Lavender, Lemongrass, SARA, Trauma Life, Frankincense and Spikenard. In addition, because of the expansion of the program, funds were given to build a specially designed cabinet to keep the oils in.
