Communities near Tigray Ethiopia face a clean water crisis. This 3-phase project will assist these villages in obtaining clean water and latrines in households as well as the local elementary school
Unsafe drinking water is the #1 killer of children under age 5, and it delays economic development in children of all ages. In Gulomekeda and Ganta-afeshum, 13% of the population has access to clean water, and 9% of the population has access to adequate sanitation services. Women and children spend hours daily collecting contaminated water. The lack of access to safe drinking water is compounded by poor hygiene habits, causing an increase in water-related diseases and child mortality.
During this project water and sanitation projects will be implemented in the communities and in a few local schools. All will receive hygiene education. Roof rainwater harvesting will be implemented in areas where there is no other feasible option.
To improve of the community’s quality of life through the provision of potable water, which will improve the status of women in the household through creating time for girl’s to have access to education and women more time for economic activities.
