The Teen Night School, located in one of the poorest and highest crime rate areas of Managua, provides remedial education for young adults who must work days to support their families.
The Teen Night School is located in the Jorge Mitrov barrio in the south-central zone of Managua. Unemployment among people of the barrio is almost 80% and inhabitants must tolerate a high crime rate. The majority of residents work in the informal sector completing tasks such as cleaning car windows at stoplights, making candy or selling coconuts from horse-drawn carts.
The goal of the Teen Night School is to assist students in obtaining their primary school diploma so they can continue their studies and receive a high school or a technical diploma.
The program seeks to help young people in the poorest areas of Managua avoid the violent and at- risk elements of their society, by giving them the education and skills to find better jobs to support themselves and their families.
